Oh, I agree- when the kids could walk, we just had the stroller along for things like trips to the zoo that might have lasted all day, so we could still be mobile when the kids were sleeping. We'd also use the strollers if we were going places where the kid could easily get lost in a crowd (Dragon*Con, yes, I am a total nerd).
That doesn't mean a stroller won't dominate the back of a car like the Mazda3 when you do take it along.
On the same note, instead of one of those aggravating backpack things, my wife carried our little ones around in a sling. She made them herself, though. Something like this, here:

I'm just shy of 6' so they are pretty far back but not all the way. I had both kids - rear facing on the pass side behind the mrs and the other, front facing seat behind me in my M3 coupe. The E30 was a sedan and had more room than the M3.
They are 10 and 8 now and fit perfectly in the back of an old 911 without any special seats :)
