Alright so a friend has a broken lug nut on his miata. It was a safety nut that shattered and part of it is still on the stud making it impossible to remove the wheel. Anyone have any suggestions on getting that thing outta there?

Can you get a chisel in there and slowly split the lugnut and then remove it?
If it comes down to it...you can tighten the snot out of it with an air impact until the stud breaks, nut strips, or you otherwise reach yield strength on metal. I'm afraid, though, it would be the aluminum wheel that would reach yield first...

I don't get it. The LUG NUT broke? How, down the center (perpindicular to the threads) or length wise?
drill out the stud and put a new one in, i've done that with stripped wheel locks more than i care to remember.
Drill a 1/8" hole as close to the center of the stud as possible. Then move up to a 5/16", then a 1/2". Be careful not to drill into the wheel. Chisel out the remaining parts, then remove the wheel, pop out the remainder of the stud, and install a new stud and nut.
I think it's going to come down to drilling the stud out. The wheel lock split in half, the top came off so there's nothing to grab onto with a wrench. The bottom half is still on the stud holding the wheel on.
I've got a set of striped nut removing sockets. A friend also had to use some security lugnut removing sockets as he was missing the key to remove them the right way.

Wheel is off, eventually we drilled enough of the stud away that it just snapped off. Stud has been ordered and is going to arrive on Thursday at the dealer. Hopefully it will go in soon after that.
