Holy Crap! Super Cheap M3! What do I do?

Alright, so on a local classified site I found a '94 M3, that seems like a too good to be true deal. I'm pretty sure it's legit though, as the seller has provided his cell phone number in the auction, and it is indeed a local number. I don't have an extra $4k, but how do you pass on a deal like this:

There's gotta be some sort of catch for it to be that cheap. But why not just call the guy and go look at it? If it's really true, you probably shouldn't pass up that good of a deal.

Catch? There was no US-spec 94 M3? Euro ones were available in 94, and those had 6-speeds....

Ah, I knew that '95 was the first year for the E36 M3, just figured it was a mistake or something. That would explain why he specified that it's a former Department of Defense employee's car. Probably a gray market import. Hmmm...I'll have to call and see if it actually has a title. I kinda think that makes it even cooler.

Either that or it's a really crafty scam.

Maybe a PO had added M badges to the car, and he doesn't know the difference?

that was my first guess...the leather color struck me as odd for an M.

If it runs... open the hood and count the throttle bodies. If it has 6 hand him the money. You can sell that engine and trans for 5k

"What do I do"? BUY IT!!!! Former DOD employee = likely a legit import of a euro market M3. Why are you even wasting your time here asking?! Just post pics of it after you pick it up.

Magma was the official name of the leather. Pretty neat looking in person actually.

As a counter for this point, my BMW mechanic assisted me in the purchase of an S50 (from a 1995 M3) and transmission, with less than 100k miles and shipped, for $2800.

My M3 had a leather color called Modena something or other that looked a bit like peanut butter but a little more orange.

I always found Modena to be beautiful too. As you noted, it was more orange-y though. I always thought it looked like a Ferrari leather color.

I've only seen black and grey leather on the early 95 M3s...huh, learn something new every day.
