My 2001 civic immobilizer light started acting up. The light started flashing as I was driving home tonight. When I got home I shut the car off and restarted and the light was still flashing. Tried restarting and stopping several times and sometimes the light stays on sometimes it goes off as it should. At no time did the car fail to start.

Do I have a bad key or a bad Ecu. Unfortunately I only got one key with the car. Anyone have a clue what's going on? It really shouldn't start if the light is on or I would think.

Thanks!

edit: title should be "immobilizer"

No Honda knowledge here, but my Corvette has been a PITA for a few days about unlocking the door or starting/shutting off. I tried my other fob - the one I don't use - same thing.

The car finally told me I needed to change the battery in the fob. I didn't think that was the problem because the other fob I've only used a handful of times. (puts tinfoil hat on) It's like the fobs know how much time has passed, not how low the fob battery is.

Maybe you need a new fob battery?

In the steering column? I was not able to find a bypass that was permanent. Is this going to be an expensive fix?

I'm still looking for help here. There's a lot of mixed information on utube. I'm not sure if I should replace the immobilizer with a used one. Does the immobilizer have to be programmed to the key or does it just send a signal to the computer that it's ok to start?

I'd be ok disabling the system if I could find a reliable way to permanently disable it.

If the security system were easy to bypass, it wouldn't be much of a security system, would it?

No, you can't change components without reprogramming.

If the car still starts and runs, but has the security light on, you need to find someone with a scan tool to tell you why.  We can guess till the cows come home, but you are very unlikely to get a "Drive a straight pin through the blue and red wires coming out of the left taillight, then click the defogger switch twice" solution.

I ran my scan tool but there are no codes saved. Maybe because the car has always started?? I bought a used immobilizer off eBay . I'm thinking/ hoping  that it's going bad and not the ecu. If my old boss wasn't such a tool I could have his son program it for me. I think I found a local locksmith that can do it cheaper than the dealer. In the meantime every time I turn the key I wonder if it's going to start.

With all the trouble I've had with the Honda's I've owned, they are now on my do not buy list.

You'll very likely need a scantool that can read the Honda-specific immobiliser codes/information. I'd hazard a guess that outside a pro-level scan tool, you won't be able to.

You'll need to log in to post.
