How a dead alternator made my day.

So the alternator on the Molvo kacked a few weeks ago. Took it into the local rebuilder and picked it up today. NO CHARGE!

(pardon the pun)

They had rebuilt this unit 4 years ago and without being told or asked, knew that they had rebuilt it and fixed it for free. I was expecting like a $100 fee. Thanks A-N Electric! Can not remember the last time I had such a stand-up transaction with a vendor

Not going to put it on today because if for any reason it goes wrong I don't want to wreck the day.

I make it a point to use our local auto electric rebuilder of starters, generators and alternators. Having a good relationship with the last of this dying industry is critical.

Based on what was on the shelf when I brought my CRX alternator in for rebuilding, the oil and gas industry is keeping my local rebuilder in business. The CRX part looked so cute by comparison.

When I had funds to get back into H-Production (2007-ish) I came across a guy in Phx who was an old fashioned rebuilder. He had a very old building by the airport filled with a variety of starters, generators and alternators. I told him about wanting to convert to a lighter alt and better starter (hi-torque). He took an hour or so to go over what he could do on my "budget" and what I could find for him to make use of. It was a very educational experience and he was very generous with his time and knowledge. Then the real estate thing happened. I went back several years later - he was gone, and the building was gone. 

The "dying breed"  thing is real. This is the last of 3 or 4 shops left from when I got to this town 32 years ago. Also down to one automotive  machine shop that I wonder how long will be around.

Being the only game in town and still being good to your customers makes it even better.
