Some 365 days ago, my wife brought home her first new car in more than a decade: a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL RWD that she leased for two years. Hyundai has had aggressive lease deals on its entire full-EV lineup, including the Ioniq 5, for the last year plus, and that’s what tempted us into he…

That lease really is a heck of deal, assuming you can actually get it.

And I like seeing couples with matching cars. Shows commitment. Our neighbors once had two Jeeps. Closest my wife and I have come is two B16A-powered Hondas.

Yeah we did get slightly different colors, though, just so it wasn't weird.

Also worth reiterating that I did this whole thing as a total civilian. Never pulled any industry cards, even though I got outed by the guy at Autoninjas. At one point I did text a friend at Hyundai with the numbers and asked "is this a good deal?" and he was like "Yeah it's less than I paid."

I had an Ionic 5 rental a few weeks ago in Houston. It was a pretty decent car, although the one we had rattled like crazy in the hatch area, but I assume that is not normal. It drove well, was comfortable, and had tons of room. It was decently quick for a regular car, enough to make merging or pulling out into traffic easy.

Glad you got a good deal!

I wonder if the rattle was one of the plug adapters in the plastic storage bin below the trunk liner. It's kind of broad and flat without many dividers and a hard plastic adapter is going to roll around like crazy back there.

I tend to be puzzled by it - I've never found one car that does everything well enough to not get an advantage of having cars with different strengths and weaknesses. Rather like the rest of a relationship sometimes.

Well, her Civic Si had a back seat where my CRX didn’t, so totally different vehicles. :)

Since you guys like the car so much I'm surprised you didn't pursue a longer lease.  I just saw one of these the other day and was mentally remarking about how much I enjoy the style.

I have just downsized my fleet by two vehicles, and as such I'm quietly repeating the following under my breath...

"I don't need another car.  I don't need another car.  Oh that looks like a good...  I don't need another car"

I like the Ioniq 5, too, and I should just go and say it: It’s everything the Mach-e wishes it was.

I'm in the market for a new DE car at school and this is on my list. Backseat area alone is worth it compared to the MachE. We got some big kids at school!

We would have jumped at three years but it wasn't on the table. These two year deals that Hyundai has been doing for the last year or so have like $13,000+ in factory money on the table, but they only offer it on the two year plans. The deals also seem pretty regional and state-specific, and Florida just happened to be a particularly good zone to be in.

Looks like the same program I leased under is renewed for April. It's on the Hyundai site, anyway. I have to imagine its days might be numbered as dealers run out of current stock, though. Or, maybe not. I'm done trying to predict the movements of the economy by saying anything more definitive than "it's uncertain."

I guess this would be cool but deep down we all know the only appropriate car for high school DE is a 1983 Buick Regal.

An interesting time in youth driver's education.  Back to that '83 Buick Regal.  At that time if you understood that car you understood any/everthing on the road.
These days...should we just start them on EVs, or Hybrids, or '83 Regals?

Personally, my school had a then, brand spanking new '82 Olds Firenza Sedan donate to the school program via the local Olds Dealer.  Like this sedan but two tone tan.  A nicely loaded model.
That car was the biggest POS.  It never started or ran correctly.  Knowing now, probably some carb problem.  Therefore, most all the training was done in the instructors personal car...'76-ish Ford Torino Wagon with 351.

I just leased a Cadillac Lyric. I turned in my Jeep Grand Cherokee and decided full electric would work for my driving needs but not at a premium price. But I got the Lyric with 500 hp and 492 km of range for $100.00 less per month than the Jeep was costing. I am pretty dang happy. Lower payments and no gas to buy. I don't even plug it in every day.

Also, did that price include the charger, or was that extra?

It comes with a 110v charger and a couple ccs/1772 to nacs adapters. There's also a program now where you can get either a $400 charge credit from ChargePoint or a level 2 charger, but if you opt for the charger you have to pay to have it installed and use one of their preferred contractors. We already have a couple of level 2 chargers at the house from previous EVs, so I opted for the credits. On my wife's '24, she got two years of free Electrify America charging, which was a pretty sweet deal. Whenever she hits our closest EA charger she says it's basically a Hyundai club meeting.
