How important is it that the base is level when doing an alignment?

I've used grease between two floor tiles. Messy messy messy.

Just as effective was salt between two floor tiles. Much easier to clean up.

You used waay too much grease. It only takes a teeny bit.

I've done it for years, and don't ever remember getting any on me or anything else.

Only the thinnest coat is needed in such a situation, if enough squeezes out to hit the floor you used too much.
