I saw one in pick and pull that still was in nice shape, I couldn't afford to buy it or to fix it if I did, but I just though that seemed pretty weird for it to be there.

In reply to Travis_K: Pretty rare by normal-car standards but not all that rare among Porsche models. All the 944 cabs were S2's, so they are very nice cars with the 3.0 L 16V engine. US production was 181 in 1989, 1825 in 1990, 563 in 1991, if I am reading correctly from PCA's The Porsche Family Tree. Danny
Moss landing, CA. Its really weird how many cars that would go for at least $5k on eBay end up getting crushed for no good reason

Cali smog failures FTL. I know more than once I've thought about loading up a truck with smog failures, or cars that will fail, and titling them in MN- especially stuff that can get collector plates. Probably make a small fortune doing that, especially since they're usually rust free.

Most likely, a few years ago many hundreds of rust free first Gen rx7s all disappeared for that reason. I think a lot of it is cars people donate so they don't have to think about selling them too.
So the U-picks in California will let you purchase smog failures, or any car on their lot? Anyone ever bought one? Good deals?

Sometimes yes you can, but they are pretty expensive ($800-$2k) and need a new gas tank and cat, etc.
They are not common and you never see them in yards around here.
That said I think they are just not as attractive as the hard top's and thus never really sold all that well comparitivly
When the cabrio hit the market, the 944 was already getting a little long in the tooth. At the same time, the Dollar was falling relative to the D-Mark and they were getting really expensive.
From a yard perspective, there are some unique parts to the cabriolets, all of which are pretty hard to get if/when you need them. -3.0l engines and their parts are still in demand. The cranks are one of the harder hot-rod parts to find. I've also heard the valve covers are getting scarce and have a market due to them cracking (magnesium?) -windshields and windows are unique to the cabriolet -power door lock parts and cabriolet specific door parts -rear decklid -convertible top and all parts related (switches, latches, strikers, motors, cables) -non-black interiors
And thats my list of hard to find parts for the cabriolet!

These kind of yards don't care. They pretty much chop the cat out, puncture the gas tank, remove and scrap the wheels, set it out for a month or two, then crush it. Its really a waste of a lot of good parts. And they have raised the prices a lot the last few years too.
