Saw one on the highway for the first time the other day. #WANT
I've spotted a couple on the street before. Don't look quite as good in person, in my opinion. Very cool that Toyota made them though.
They are the reason I almost bought a is300 engine/manual transmission combo off of craigslist even though I don't and never have owned an is300. You know, just in case.

Doesn't mean automatic transaxle? /Troll
They are so rare that I think they qualify as unicorns even with the AT. I've only seen 3 or 4 in the wild, and none in black like the one in the OP's pic.
I wouldn't go out of my way to get one, but if one came to me, I would snap it up for sure. That generation of IS300 is about the only modern Toyota product that I really like.

In radiospeak, TX means transmitter. I've always used (and heard) ATX and MTX used for automatic and manual transmissions, with no specification as to whether it was a transmission or transaxle.
Also known as the SportCross. I'd love to have one. But I now have what they call a rear facing convertible car seat. No fit.
I have hunted these for some time. They are getting exceptionally hard to find now with less than 100-120K miles. The drivetrain is extremely solid and owners seem to hold on to them for 10+ years. Many have also been lowered/stanced to the point of too much work to return to normal. Best place I've found for their listings is the auto trader site as most seem to be traded in instead of sold on CL.
Had one...
was unimpressed... the roof line, and floor height doesn't allow for much carrying room... The rear wheels are 1/2" wider, but the car needed more than that to cope with the back.
The REAL cool version of this car was never imported... In Japan you could get this with AWD
Altezzea Gita.

Just 2JZ it and be done with it, they are essentially Supra's underneath, so a wrecked Supra Turbo and some parts overnighted from Japan and you could have a pretty fun IS300 wagon.
These were one of those de-facto exotics. They're one of the rarer cars out there, I think less than 1000 sold in the US.
But I could be mistaken on that factoid.

I'm pretty much an "LSx Everything!!!!" person, but yeah - the proper answer on this car is to get the parts to make it think it's a Supra Turbo with a manual.
Very high on my personal "grown up/responsible person" wagon list.

I think thats why I want to 5.3L one, because its easier to just XJZ one instead.

No where near.... you are thinking the SC300/400. The 1st gen IS is either an Altezza, an IS300, or IS200(Europe) only.
They are ALL (IS300) 2JZ powered(215hp, 215 #/ft), just not turboed. The Altezza used the 3SGE BEAMS engine (215hp 160~#/ft), the IS200 used the 1GGFE. The later 2 came with the AZ6 6 speed optional
In reply to oldeskewltoy:
I stand corrected. I just remember they being touted as Supra's in a fat suit. A 2jz swap still seems like a decent choice, even if it isn't as easy as one may think.
