FWIW, I've done this many times - but to VA. The Texas DMV/rules should not play into this at all.
You can get a temp tag/trip permit from YOUR STATE (how this is done varies from state to state, and in NC apparently it sucks) + get insurance on the vehicle. This effectively registers the car in your state for several days. Fly to seller, purchase car, keep bill of sale/title with you, stick on temp sticker/tag/whatever on car, drive home.
