I wasn't sure where you were going with the school bus thing, but the payoff was most excellent!
Here's a question, though... The fasteners are usually TTY and don't get reused. So, do you put it together with the old fasteners, check the clearance, then do it for reals with the new ones? Or is it okay to just use the new ones and put them back in?
Hmmm. Good question. I would probably use either the old ones, or maybe half-torque the TTY just for the measurement.
In reply to wae :
I was taught that there is no need to go to full torque for this process. I tighten to 25 ft-lbs and then do the clearance check.
The other point to consider when doing this: Say the stripe on the package says 0.002. Is that the actual clearance you are going to have when the engine is running? If the crank is clean and lying on the lower half of the bearing, you will have zero clearance at the bottom and 0.002 on the opposite side of the journal. When running, with a uniform layer of oil, would this not me more like 0.001 or half of whatever the strip indicates? Or is this already factored into the stripe calculation on the paper?
I think if you over-think it, people who don't think much will not think it through enough and it will go wrong. Best to keep it simple. Or not to know.
