I might be getting myself in over my head with this...

One nice thing about living up here at the end of the world is I'm surrounded by two track, snowmachine trails, and ATV trails heading off in to the bush as far as the eye can see. We have a small-ish outdoor MX track in North Pole, and there's miles of trails in the flood control channel and levees outside of Fairbanks, etc. But, there isn't a single enduro or dual sport ride in the entire state of Alaska.

I'd like to change that and put together a funduro or hard dual sport ride or three, with an eye towards making it a full-bore enduro with several events eventually. I've got an idea of where to look to start routing trails. I have an idea of which organizations to approach for help (Yukon Quest and Fairbanks Dog Mushers Association, since they know and maintain a lot of the trail systems in winter, and two of the MC/ATV dealers in Fairbanks who help with the MX track and current ORV trails). Ideally, I'd like to have the event work as a fundraiser for either of those organizations or the local fire departments that have spent all summer keeping the forests from burning down around us.

What I'm not sure about is how to get things from the idea stage (where I'm at now) to reality. For those of you who've put events together from scratch, any advice on how to proceed? Suggestions for how to organize the event, get the word out, etc? Things you wish someone had told you before you got started?

The earliest I'd expect to be able to have an event ready is late next summer. I'm also very aware that as the organizer I probably won't be able to actually ride in my own event as I'll be too busy running things.

Get a group of like minded people first. Many hands make things easier. Oh, don't forget the insurance.

Find organizations that do races elsewhere and get them talking. First topic: insurance cost and what is required to get insured.

Make friends with a lawyer who will advise you for free.

Never, ever, ever forget that the world is run by lawyers and insurance companies.

You will need a race director/chief steward, a chief flagger, tech inspector, corner workers. Grid people. Scorers. that is just a start. Access to tow trucks and ambulance. and of course a set of rules. Simple, isn't it.

You'll need to log in to post.
