There is a bunch of stuff on ebay but what works?
For light scratches I use a course cutting/rubbing compound, wool pad, buffer, and time. Dont build too much hwat. Tempered glass shatters.

Um, nothing?
Seriously, I have had to do it, and it can be done. But it takes hours. And cleaning the slurry mess from everything is remarkably difficult.
The stuff to use is cerium oxide. I'd recommend skipping the cute little kits and buy a pound jar from Amazon. It'll cost less and does a lot more.
A big buffer, a fair bit of pressure, careful water supply, and a lot of time.
0000 extra fine steel wool with some window cleaner will do wonders, 000 if you have many bugt chunks and such then finish with 0000
Yeah, that 0000 steel wool does clean off bugs, etc. Been using it for years! I also bought one of those glass polishing kits years ago. I did use it a few times and it did work for very minor scratches but most times if I can get a windshield for the car in question for a reasonable price I replace the windshield.
I tried one of those kits a couple weeks ago. The windshield had a lot of small scratches (hundreds of them) and a few deep ones. I spend an hour on a small section and ended up with a significant reduction in scratches, but optical 'waviness' or distortion when looking through it. So, my conclusion is: takes forever, helps with the scratches, but messes up the windshield anyway. Got a new windshield and am now much happier.
