Swapping out the steering column in my 2000 Firebird tomarrow. Whats the best way to remove then reinstall the airbag? Just unplug? pull fuse? unhook battery?

I always just carefully unplugged them. Remember though, treat them like the bomb they are.

Don't be a dumbass and it's all good. I have yet to do any of the sort and probably jinxing myself but never had one go off yet.

There is a line of fire. Stay out of it just in case.

I did it in my Miata and E36. I disconnected the battery, then carefully unplugged the airbag connector while staying clear of the path of the bag. I then very gently removed it and placed it on a bench far away from me.

It is a bomb. Don't forget that and you'll be fine.

I always disconnect the battery and step on the brakes for a second to use the brake lights to discharge any remaining voltage before disconnecting an airbag.

Technically you should disconnect the battery then do something to make sure all is discharged(wait 3+ min, turn on lights, etc).

In reality I've rarely done that. Probably removed/reinstalled 100+ airbags.

Think about it: they need power and ground to go off. They're not getting power from the SRS module unless you hit something/etc while moving X mph. Don't stuff a horn wire on the terminals and you should be good.

For liability reasons I advise you should disconnect the battery. Do as I say, not as I do.

Read the disarm procedure in the FSM? I just unplug them but I couldn't recommend that to somebody else.

i just unbolt them, pull them out, and unplug them... it aint going off unless the system sends voltage to it, and the odds of that happening with the key off is close enough to zero to not worry about it..

i took the airbag out of my Neon apart just to see how they are built... kind of cool...

Cut the green wire or the red wire?

What if the wires have two colors?

Make sure the battery is not connected while removing OR installing the air bag!

Don't shuffle your feet on carpet before touching the connector.

Hit the sensor with a hammer? No worries after that.

Once they are unplugged they are pretty safe.

With the battery disconnected you should be fine, though I did swap a steering wheel with the battery connected but I was younger and dumber at the time.

  1. Remove carefully
  2. Remember NOT to put it in the microwave
