We're usually visiting the in-laws in Deland around Mother's Day and I noticed that the CFR region SCCA is putting on a PDX and club race the week before.

I'd love to get a chance to run at Daytona even for a PDX, so I'm wondering if anybody has recommendations for someone renting out track prepped cars in the area? Preferably not a Spec Piñata, although I'd take one if that's all that's available.

Don't have the time to drive across the country and shipping my car back and forth would be prohibitively expensive.

I'm pretty sure that you have to be an advanced driver to run the high banks, be sure to contact the PDX chief for approval before the opening date, as it fills up fast. No Mo Money Racing rents well prepared, yup, miatas ask for Paul. Daytona is a blast and well worth the price of admission.

Thanks, I've pinged the PDX chief re the requirements, let's see what he has to say. No point in worrying about a car if I don't fulfill the requirements.

Re the price of admission, I hear you. Heck, if it's anything like the price they charged this year it's less than my region charges for a PDX at Thunderhill West.

Your odds are pretty good if you can show knowledge, experience and or a competition license. They like full fields and there were a few slots open at the last event. I hope to have a license by then if not, I'll run the PDX cause it's too good to pass up.

Well, I am currently running Club Trials with my local SCCA region and instruct PDX at our events as one of the scared guys in the right seat , with appropriate endorsement on the back of my SCCA license. If I get my physical done by then I should have a regional competition license- I did do the driver's school already at Bondurant, just can't get my arse to the doctor since our previous family doctor shut up shop.

Main issue is that I've been rather negligent with the SCCA logbook, plus a lot of my experience is either in the UK or non-SCCA events over here so it's not that easy to prove.

I doubt you'll have a problem, Art and his staff are real good at what they do. The worse thing I can see happening is a ride along or a drive and follow if you rent a race car.

I wouldn't consider a ride along or a lead follow a bad thing, given that my only familiarity with Daytona is from driving it in iRacing and I'd rather not try and fly off in all the same locations that I've flown off trying to drive a simulated SRF . Heck, I'd probably ask for one...

That's funny, Daytona is really like any other track except, the length of time at WOT, top speeds depending on the car, of course and in the high bank turns you can only see like 30 feet behind you. So you have to pick a lane and hold it untill it straightens out.

Got an email back last night from the PDX Chief - SCCA license is an automatic in for that PDX. Guess that should help with the motivation to get my physical done and submit the paperwork for the license.

That PDX event is always run on the school course. It has a falic shape and utilizes the horseshoes and part of the motorcycle course. It's actually pretty fun to drive and if you sign up for a novice slot you can run.

going to Daytona and not getting on the banking would be a bummer. When I used to race motorcycles, they had races that used the banking. It was way out of my region, but I had a friend who did - it was his first time ever on a track on a motorcycle.

Running the banks is awesome; but, the SCCA is very very particular about running that course. Chumpcar will let you sign up and run though (fortunately but also unfortunately....too many people thinking they are Handsome Harry Gant)

Hey Tim, if you want to scratch 2 off the bucket list Chin Motorsports is holding a DE at Sebring on Sunday. What a fun but somewhat pricey weekend. With membership and instructor, since it's your first time there, probably about $400.

Adding Sebring would be cool but I don't think I can take two days off for motorsport if we're in town for only 4-5 days. The big advantage of going to Daytona is that it's about half an hour from my in-laws place.

I'll second the fact that the Daytona "school course" is a lot of fun. You don't touch the banking, but you won't be bored, either.

I may be in the minority, but if you can only do one I'd pick Sebring.

The full Daytona course is cool but kind of no big deal once you get over driving out of the side window/corner of the windshield. The banking is flat out in just about any car, and in a low power car like SM seems to go ON AND ON AND ON AND ON, unless running in a draft. Coolest corner is the busstop on the back straight at 10/10, but pucker factor is high and I don't know that I'd do that in a car I didn't own.

Sebring on the other hand is my favorite track besides WGI. Its technical and fast in spots, so when you get it really right it feels amazing, perfect for a DE. You could spend literally the whole day working on 17. Chin also runs really good events.

I've never run the Daytona school course, so can't say anything about it.

You'll need to log in to post.
