I miss having a luxury sedan to DD, and with diesel being ridiculous I don't want to drive my truck unless it's doing truck things.

putzing around on marketplace, I can throw a dart in any direction and hit an 80-120k mile Jaguar XF supercharged for 9-12k in seemingly very nice condition. I was thinking at first looking for an M56 or other Infiniti, but the jags have 470hp and are absolutely stunning.

So, aside of being labeled a jag-off, what's their downfall? Are they ticking time bombs? I have zero qualms about buying one to drive into the ground for the next 10 years, or to drive for 2 years and sell when the next piece of shiny metal catches my eye. I love very expensive but very depreciated things. If these things are at 10k now will they drop to 6-7 when carvana implodes and the new car supply really gets flowing again?

educate me, please.

Personally the M56 is on my list. Swap the diff with a 350z LSD and done.

$10k plus tax, title, license and maintenance, and fuel buys a lot of diesel.

If the goal is a nice place to spend time, have at it.

If the goal is to save money in fuel, suggest doing some math first.

You already know my answer to your question.  Just be aware the supercharged mpg is pretty low and requires premium grade fuel ($$), but hey 470 hp ! ! !

Fuel savings aside, also to keep miles and road salt off my forever truck. A brand new off the transporter cummins 4x4 1 ton ram was definitely a buy once cry once occurrence.

Don't worry, I always do the math.

I bought a very low mileage (45k miles) 2010 XF a year ago, albeit a non supercharged one and I really enjoy it.  Gas mileage around town sucks, but on the highway it gets 25 mpg which isn't too bad for a largish saloon car.  I did have to replace the battery and alternator along with having the start button module rebuilt which is apparently a common issue according to the shop I take it to (Jag/Rover specialist).  I've done two relatively long drives in it (680 miles return), and it was great.  It had grace, space and pace, to quote Jaguar, even the cat enjoyed the long drives in it.

Maybe then start the conversation with "I want to keep road salt off my truck" not "the price of diesel is ridiculous"

Easier to make a flimsy decision on feels than on maths.

That being said I did this dance and eventually gave it up - the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.  Condensing the fleet took away a lot of stress.

I have to say - the concept of buying a big, newish Jaguar as a winter beater to keep salt off of your pickup truck is an idea that no one would have been able to get their heads around 20 years ago.

I love the idea of a M56. They're on my own "want list.".

I remember a summer gathering at your house where I drove out the green Q45 and then I rode in Brian's black Jag that same day.  I really liked the Jag too.

I'm surrounded by these new, more modern XJLs. My neighbor immediately to my south has a really pretty, light blue loaded model. I think the side badge says portifino.

My neighbor immediately to my north has a white one, not sure of trim level.

So, with all that said and all that is cool about 400 hp...  I'll be putting a Prius up for sale soon. 2004 w/160k. I need $4k.  I call this one P5, my fifth Prius. It's origin story begins at the bottom of page 8

Comes with its winter tires too (not yet mounted)

They're nice cars. The cooling systems are plastic, like BMW's, and are basically maintenance items. I think they have ZF trans which weren't the best for a lot of Jaguar owners.

The v8 cars sound great with just a resonator delete and some aftermarket exhaust sound down right insane.

With your skills, def do it. I would.

Was hoping you would chime in. Thus far they're staying on the short list but the "cooling system like bmw" is a turn off for sure. My problem is the short list is a mile long and includes a 2 door gmt400 yukon gt and a Nissan Stagea so my ADD has me all over the place

I have seen multiple of these for sale with "computer issues" that render then inoperable for <$2k.

Enough of them that I've wondered what it would take to liberate the 470hp engine for fun car purposes.

I don't know what it's all about however but before I spent 12k on a runner I'd find out.

Yeah deep diving this morning has shown a handful more than enough to be concerned about with "just needs key programmed" for 20-40% of normal. Like we know if it JUST needed that you would pay the dealer $300 and ask 3-5x more for the car.
