For the record, my prejudice is based on Need for Speed 5.

For the record, I'm not even sure if that's a movie or a video game.

The first/only NFS game that a pretense of sim-like physics instead of arcade-style nonphysics. Pretty much every Porsche ever was in it.
My prejudice is also based on the observation that newer is always suckier.

was that the Porsche unleashed one? if so I spent many hours driving the 356 in that game.
911 then 356. I prefer the character and driving characteristics of the 911 better, but man are the 356s exploding in value.
A while we tried to answer that question for a Classic Motorsports. A friend of ours has matching, mint, white 1965 Porsches--a 356 and a 911. After driving both, yeah, though call. To me, the 356 felt a little more special, while the 911 might be a bit more useful. Also, a 1965 911 is worth a lot more than a 1965 356. Once you look at later cars, the difference based on cost factor changes.
I'm surprised no one has said 356 + 911 mechanicals. Putting a flat six and 901/915 in a 356 is not that hard. Seeing the tach and speedo needles move at the same rate in 4th gear can be quite entertaining.

Yes, yes it was. It was also my first game that worked with Force Feedback, and it really felt like the 356 had a fingertip-light 17" steering wheel. The 935 was also a ton of fun because you could HEAR the turbo and a big dead area in the response while you waited for it to wake up.
I would certainly hope that a real 356 doesn't drive like a Karmann Ghia. The 356 diverged from the Type 1 sometime around 1950. Porsche kept improving everything in the interests of making it better, VW more or less didn't, preferring to just crank cars out like sausages with minimal engineering updates as necessary.
The 356. It gives back, to all of my senses, much more than the 911. With that said, between a 356 and a 930 would be a tuff choice.
Is that 356 from TN? If so I think I know that car.
I have a 911 but want a 356. I wonder if I had a 356 if I would want a 911...
Since I've never driven either, I'd have to drive them first to decide. It would also depend on my situation at the time. Would I be looking at the car as something to add to my collection of classic cars, or as more of a track-rat/driver. If the former, I'd probably lean towards the 356. The latter, a 911, and although it goes against the hive leanings, probably a newer water-cooled one.
I enjoy looking at both of them but the 356 just a little bit more. Saw a nice one here in town yesterday and it really did grab the attention.
911 for me. I have no interest in the 356 at all. I'd want something i could easily get parts for, not feel bad or care about molesting, and could drive the snot out of at any chance.
That's going to be a 911 or a hideously expensive 356 restomod.
911 hands down.
When I was a kid in the 1980s, my dad had a VW/Porsche shop & I've driven several of each. 356s have always left me a little cold. They're gorgeous, but the driving experience is very AC Beetle-like. They aren't even fast. The 911 wins, hands-down for having the best steering ever fitted to an automobile, that glorious flat six soundtrack and the addictive mid-range waft of torque. Take my opinion with a big grain of salt, though, because I prefer water cooled Porsches to air cooled and 914/6s to early 911s, so clearly my taste is clearly all in my mouth.

Thats my situation, so I think the solution is just to have both. I love my 911 and won't part with it, but plan to add a 356 to the stable at some point. I just prefer the 911 overall, so bought it first.
356 coupe
Because I don't want to go fast, I just want to be old and classy. The curves on the car are just excellent. Probably has a lot of trim pieces made out of real wood. Basically like an ideal grandpa car for me.
