I am helping my son rebuild the 3.8 engine in his Genesis Coupe and am finding a dearth of information of rebuilding the engine.  Can anybody point to a good source for things like torque specs and bolt sequence, piston ring gap and cylinder head torque and sequence specs.  The main bearing bolts are tightened to a certain torque and then 90 degrees.  Would that make these torque to yield bolts or just regular old bolts.  I know the cyl head bolts are tty and they included new ones with the rebuild kit.  As bad as Hyundai engines are, I am surprised by the absence of info.

I don't have access to SI right now, but a lot of automakers treat bottom ends as assemblies and don't provide parts or info.

The bolts MAY be TTY.  Clean them up and put two bolts against each other thread to thread.  When they yield it is usually at the part of the threads that don't engage, so there will be a thread where the pitch is slightly different.  Going thread to thread will make seeing yielded bolts plain as day

Sometimes the new bolts are provided not because they yield, but because they have a coating.  Audi TFSI head bolts, for instance, have a super slick moly like coating.  The first time you use them, they torque up like butter.  The second time, they stick and gritch and groan and fight you and you wonder if they are even tight.

Well these are creaking and groaning like crazy.  We also didn't know if any lube or what kind should be put in them.

In reply to spitfirebill :

Unless specified otherwise, a small amount of engine oil on the threads and under the heads.  Yes this doesn't help if you don't have that info...

I like to cut the head off of an old bolt and chuck it in a drill to chase the threads first, too.

Thanks Pete.  We did put a little oil in those places.

If ARP offers fasteners for this application i would use them.  Follow the ARP torque specs.
