A friend of mine is seriously considering buying a 2013 Genesis with the 2.0T and a stick.

What else would you consider sporting in the same vein of interest? The big thing for him is something that gets decent mpg, as he has a beater truck if he needs to haul anything which isn't very often and wants a nice DD that he can own for years. The car will be tracked quite a bit (expect 5+ events per year). And we already have a beater race car.

Your suggestions can be fwd, rwd, awd, but must be $30k cdn or less (maybe an extra grand or two since he is now selling his jdm Subaru if he goes ahead with this). The car should get 20+usmpg in the city and 25+usmpg on the highway, and NO v6 mustangs. Gratuitous power (or easy to make power) is highly recommended.

I'm assuming that he only wants to look at new cars. I'm guessing that he should look at the MS3, GTI, and WRX.

A jdm subaru for a grand or two could be a pretty good deal...

Most obvious choice would be a Scion FR-S/Subaru BR-Z...

This fits the bill other than lack of "Gratuitous power".

Why no V6 Stang? Is the extra 30hp over the genesis offensive to him.

Honestly it sounds like the genesis would be perfect for him (since he ruled out the stang). If he wants gratuitous power the FRSBRZ isn't for him and there isn't much else in the smaller 2 door class that makes silly power for that cheap.

Abarth Fiat 500. I just want one, it looks like too much fun.

How about a Supra, or a Skyline? Way less than 30k.

Since you can get these in Canada, they would spank the Gensis everywhere.

In reply to T.J.:

If you want to ruin the car with power it's easily upgrade-able with the many Turbocharger and supercharger kits already in development for it. Here's a pretty impressive one showing how scary an FR-S @ 9psi with ~320hp and ~250lbft at the wheels would be (better than 8.5:1 power/weight ratio), though not really a daily driver as it's running on E85:

Accelerated Performance has a more streetable setup in testing with ~280hp and ~210lbft at the wheels on 93 octane pump they are currently testing out. And TRD will have supercharger...

Is there any reason your friend does not actually test drive one of the twins and make an informed decision?

I drove them both and there was "something" about the FRS that made me move the money to that side of the table. Yeah, the Genesis (and the rustang) has more kick in the balls, but good lord man, that is like marrying a hooker just for the one skill-set.

More to life.

In some areas of Canada, RHD cars from Japan are getting almost impossible to insure. Legally you can get them into Canada, but if you can't insure it you can't drive it.
