We have a bunch of Subaru's that autocross with us. Only one still has the original engine. None of their owners are idiots.

I owned an adult boost buggy (Legacy GT). Sold it at a large loss after having to replace the short block at 63k miles. I never raced it and generally just cruised around to work and back. Spun bearing number 3. Known issue for the EJ255. I'll never buy another Subaru.

This, SoA have proven themselves to be very inconsistant with the warranty approval/denials with the ringland issue....so I would probably trust them even less than GM at this point. Also, any particular reason for awd in your land that rarely snows?
Because there are no RWD turbo cars except BMW and those all start way outside what I'm willing to spend. The M235i starts at $42k I think?
I shopped the M235i which starts at $43K for RWD and $45K for the X Drive AWD........yes it comes in an X Drive now also. The CLA 45 AMG which starts at $47K and the 2015 WRX. I ended ordering a a WRX Premium with short shifter and some exterior pieces for #30K. You simply can't beat it. It's that good. I wanted a snooty German sports sedan but loved the WRX. This will be my sixth Subie. I can hardly wait. And by the way you can easily add another 10K-20K in options with the Germans without even trying.
That's a pretty glowing review! Did you happen to check out the interior's in the Limited? Is the leather nice or cheap crap like has been in Nissan's for years? I'm already imagining the angry wife conversation. lol I will admit though, one thing I love about the STi is the still unequal length headers and that subie rumble. The WRX doesn't have that with the new layout.

Just to clarify, the interior of the WRX does not match the MBs or BMWs but it's not that far off and it's light years better than Subarus of just 10 years ago. My son has a 2013 WRX and the 2015 is significantly better than that. My point is, the BMW is $15-20K more and the MB with the proper options is mid to upper 50K range. That difference in money buys a lot of damn speed parts! As I said, this will be my sixth Subaru and it's by far the best. I did not check out the leather interior on the Limited as I don't want leather and they weren't any in stock to check out anyway. I still want a German sports sedan, it will just have to wait another couple of years.

I've been reading that for the EJs that are used hard, the oil pickup and windage tray are a must to replace to the factory brazing on the oil pickup tube.

Did you buy the Legacy new or was it used? I find that many people that have complaints about Subaru motors purchased them used with questionable or unknown history. Subarus tend to get abused and beat on and then sold. I have had 5 Subarus, all purchased new and they are the only brand of car that I haven't had any trouble with. I bought my son an Impreza (new) for college, he drove it for four years and 120K miles with out any problems at all. Anyway, our experiences are completely different from each others......I love them.........you hate them.

Bought new. Turbo cars seem to have the most problems, though the 2.5 motors are known for having head gasket problems.

None of these had cracked pickups. And oiling doesn't cause cracked ringlands, which is a predominant issue.

I thought that was a materials/tune problem on the early new gen cars. That even the factory tune sucked.

Is it still continuing, or is just internet speak at this point?

Fun car, no doubt, but I've already had one. I've never had AWD before and I've wanted an STi since I graduated college. Now without a dedicated track car in the garage, I think I can justify the cost of ownership.

I can get with that.

If there was a Mistu dealer in town I'd likely just get the EVO X.

Stock tune is garbage on all of them, up to and including the BRZ (massive hole in the torque curve for no apparent reason). First stop for any Subaru after break in should be a tuner.

The new WRX engine hasn't been out long enough for any patterns to emerge.

True, but from my understanding the STi motor is essentially the same as it has been for years, maybe since 08?

Even with an aftermarket tune, the cylinder 4 ringland issue is still present.

So would you go for an EVO X even though there isn't a dealer within about 110 miles?

I've got an Evo X and the nearest Mitsubishi dealer is about 2.5h drive away. The one I go to (which is the one I bought the car from) is ~5h away but sells and services more Evos.

I used to have a local shop that did the minor servicing but they closed, so it's becoming a bit of a PITA to have it looked after, but it's perfectly doable in my case. Mind you, I have a couple of cars and only do about 10k/year in the Evo.

Yeah, the boost buggy would become my only car. And if I don't take my wife to the airport on Sunday night/Mon morning, there wouldn't be another car for me to drive until Friday.
