I don't like Dave Despain, but I just got thru watching one of his On Assignment shows about the building of Daytona Speedway and it was very very good.
Lots of things I remembered and lots I never knew.
I'm sure it will show up on Speed again if you look
I guess it depends on when you first saw him..Back in the 80s, me and my SCCA buddies loved him, because so many racing commentators didn't like road racing (I still recall Larry Nuber on ESPN walking up to drivers at the Phoenix Copper Classic and asking, "..why do you hate road racing?"). Despain seemed to treat all racing equally, and actually asked the kinds of questions at an IMSA or SCCA event that we'd ask if we were there instead.
We were all shocked to hear (four or five years later) that he was into bikes, and didn't really care much for cars at all. OTOH, maybe that explains why he treated all disciplines equally in the first place...

Wind Tunnel is the only place I've ever seen autocross on TV.
I never watch those Top Gear guys and I watched the last 20 minutes last night with some little blue car they were modifying to go fast.
Those guys crack me up. What a riot. That Dave dude gets old quickly.
I like Dave, mainly because he covers all forms of motorsport. I am sure that speed likes him to cover NASCAR more often, so that is what happens. However, Windtunnel is much better if you DVR it and fast forward through the NASCAR stuff.
The post wasn't really about Dave Despain, it was about the Building Daytona show which was good.
And if you FF thru the Nascar stuff on Windtunnel you can get to the 3 minutes of real racing - not worth the effort.
I can take him or leave him.
When Speed stopped carrying WRC, he's one of those who told rally fans to get over it and learn to like NASCAR because that's where the money is.
I voted with my remote. I don't watch that channel nearly as much as I used to.

I instinctively recoil at the sound of his voice, because it means that a network that owns loads of footage of actual racing that I would love to watch is actively wasting airtime TALKING about racing instead of letting me watch any.

Probably could have used a different thread title if you didn't want to talk about Dave Despain....

Talking about racing has to be better than watching NASCAR drivers play poker.

OR people could have actually read the first post
I figured if I just said it was a show about Building Daytona all the Dave haters would have said, well it might be good, but I won't watch it cause Dave's hosting it. I thought this way I'd steal their thunder and make the thread stay on topic.
