Yep, I really like the shop and they cut me a break, loan me tools, and let me flip through their repair books.
I stopped by this afternoon, and the transmission was already out and apart. The case is cleaned up and looks brand new (literally, I asked why they bought a new case at first). No "hard parts" were damaged, so it should be fairly straight forward. I also got to play with the burned out clutch packs, woohoo! I told them to go ahead and replace the rear main seal and the driveshaft flex disc while they were in there.
I looked the car over on the list, and it looks like the suspension was redone shortly before it was parked–everything is new.
Tires got here today and Gary delivered them.
Overall, it seems to be going fairly smoothly. I'm planning a trip to Alabama in it next week.
Oh, and I found this hitch for my car:
Any thoughts? Safe to tow my camping trailer?

Only one way to find out!
I believe those are meant for pretty light loads, though I've seen one pulling a 10ft landscaping trailer being filled with woodships. Didnt stick around to see if it would actually move though.
Oh no, looks like it needs a transmission valve body. Anyone know where I can find a used one?

Check with Star Motor Service in Charleston, SC. Disclaimer: I used to work there. http://www.starmotor.com/

From what I hear, in Europe, that car would be enough to tow the Queen Mary. In America, it's good for a shifter cart on a HF foldable trailer.

That hitch ball looks suspiciously like a sextoy.
You did sag ANY thoughts.
I ordered the toy/hitch, and the Benz is going camping with me in a week or so! That is, after we finish our work session on our Factory Five 818.
In other news, I'm no longer just an S-Class owner; I'm an award-winning S-Class owner!
You still need a valve body? I have a whole parts car I will sell you for cheap...
Nope, the shop found a valve body.
I'm very, very interested in the parts car, though. Details?
