What is the go-to high quality replacement fuel pump for a bone stock 1.8 NA Miata (96 model if it matters) ? I want the good E36 M3.

But, what pump is OEM ?
I used the Denso on my 99. For your 96 it lists Carter as OEM but there is also a Denso available. There is always your local Mazda Dealer. The aftermarket shops like our fav, FM, have bigger than OEM fuel pumps.
FM also has stock replacement pumps.

The only recommendation I have is to stay away from Walbro. I've seen too many failures. Denso should be pretty solid.
I ordered two by mistake last year. I have one that's still in the unopened box plus the Flyin Miata invoice.
This is the one I bought for my car- https://www.carparts.com/details/Mazda/Miata/Replacement/Fuel_Pump/1999/REPG314502.html?TID=gglpla&origin=pla&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIk6uN2eDU4AIVoh-tBh2VkwQpEAQYASABEgIkk_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
As it was the closest one to be exactly like the one being taken out. The only real issue I had was that the connector that came with it was incorrect. But it was easy to take out the pins and put them into the original connector. No splicing at all.
Given the cost and the work to change the pump, it's a good deal. I may try to collect a few pumps of the same era to have some spare connectors. I think it's the easiest to be plug and play.
