Prius + CX-5 or non-turbo CX-7
Was I correct with the assumption earlier that your wife does not put on many miles per year?
If yes, and knowing she wants a "green" car for herself, how about an electric or hybrid lease for her?
For you, who puts on more miles, a used purchase?
I like to keep my wife in new cars and myself in used because she is not willing to "listen" to a car the way I will and is not tolerant of older car's antics.
I think your state offers large incentives on "green" leases.
Can you find a rare, used, manual CX5? (sadly, only offered in shades of gray.)

She does 8-10K/year, I do 15-18K/year but usually because we road-trip my car. We have cash and want to avoid payments and she is all too acutely aware of car antics (hence why the GP has to go). The Prius makes sense for her for sure. I need to drive a C-Max again but I know that the 08-10 Mazda5 would fit my needs pretty well already.
If you decide prius really make sure the luggage space is sufficient for you. Come every family road trip I lament the lack of space in our 2g prius. The hatch is filled to the glass with various other things behind the front seats. This is for a family of 4 with one kid in a rear facing and one preteen. The 3g has slightly but will probably still be an issue. If you pack really light it is doable.
So, Prius C for you because it's a tiny cool looking 50mpg hatchback that can be modded to handle, and Prius V for her because it's a small minivan that doesn't look like a minivan and gets 40mpg.
