I have a Miata DD/track car (more on the track side lately). I've been looking for a better all around DD. You guys have me looking at Cherokees, GTO's, Subies, P71's, and more. If I didn't have the self control and keep reminding myself that I need the $$ to race, who knows how many cars I would have. Instead I just torture myself looking at all these cars online thinking to myself, well maybe if I ditch (insert monthly expense here) I could swing it....
Really, I hate you all. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/cool-18.png)

That's okay, we all love you.
If you have a Miata currently, the correct answer is XJ Cherokee.

Bzzzzt. Chevy Astro.
The Astro is The Trinity, correct.
However, if you go through the reader's rides, i will contend that far more people own both Cherokee and Miata than Astro and Miata.
I seriously do not understand infatuation with the Astro or the Cherokee.

I didn't get it either, until i bought my Cherokee. (I did it out of order, Cherokee first, Miata second)
It's been dead nuts reliable (other than lunching a starter and a signal flasher unit) over the last year. It's got 177k miles on it, runs and drives beautifully, stereo is decent, heat and a/c works, handles far better than i expected, and it's comfy.
And it absolutely LAUGHS at any type of weather. (In 4wd mode at least. 2wd is kindof scary in snow.)

Astro is the go-to tow/haul vehicle. Cherokee is the go-to bad weather (as in actual bad weather) vehicle.

+1.
Long distance towing with a Cherokee probably isn't the best idea.
I'll be towing the Escort with the Cherokee, but it'll be on a dolly to reduce tongue weight, and it WILL have upgraded brakes.
Would i rather a late Astro/Safari for long distance towing? Absolutely.

+1000 The P71 also mystifies me.
I totally get the love for all the little, lightweight tin-can-turned-race-cars out there. Even the Yugo (ok, not really... but I get why). I just do not understand the love for basic utility. I mean - I use a toilet every day and I understand the reliable job it does for me but I do not love it.

My grand Cherokee is the least favorite vehicle to drive in my stable. It has good traction in the snow, but offers no feedback about what's actually going on down there making it problematic in bad weather. It would be the first to leave the garage if I were allowed to sell it. It has no interior room given the exterior dimensions and can't tow my trailer. But it was my wife's first car, so it cannot leave. We call it the princess.
Trinity? Ha. I would trade it for a previous-generation Outback in a heartbeat. More fun, better in bad weather, less fuel.

The P71 answers the question "How do I get a 5-year old car for under $2500?" or "How do I get a V8, RWD, 4-door?", or "How can I have the cheapest car to maintain and insure and not die in a wreck?" or "I have 14 dead bodies to drive to a pier and don't want to take two trips, what do I get that can still carry me, Vinny, Tony, and Mario?".
Don't feel bad, they all hated my X3 idea and I couldn't be happier.
Did I mention I was tall?

Tow vehicle? You need yourself a Roadmaster with the LT1. Obviously.

You realize the that the Grand Cherokee and regular Cherokee have pretty much nothing in common and are totally different cars, right? That's like saying I don't get why people like Miata's because my FB RX-7 has no steering feel.

Sounds like my 302 F150 but your Cherokee probably gets better mileage. Over 200000 miles and runs like its off the showroom floor. I do still miss my p71 though.

You just described half of what's parked in my driveway. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/cool-18.png)

I'd roll a 4.0 GC. I wouldn't TOUCH a V8 one.
[edit] i was wrong

That makes two of us in this thread, then.
I know there's more of us Miata/XJ combo owners out there. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/crazy-18.png)
i often wonder if i would have owned 5 e30's, a P71, and a miata, if not for grm.

Interesting... because I have a racecar, I haven't touched kijiji in 4 weeks. All resources, time, and effort have been devoted to it and I love it :D

Uhhhwaaaaaaaat? There are few moments greater in a weekday than sitting on the throne reading GRM.

It also answers the question "How do I get a large V8 to make so little power?" and "What should I buy, I need a huge trunk to store my friends in because the back seat has almost no leg room?" and "How can I satisfy my desire to fool people into thinking I'm an authority figure?" Oh and don't forget the "what am I going to do with all these spare helicoils?"
I get the XJ, it's basically a manly, low-range Subaru wagon.
I sort of get the Astro (I mean, I bought one), vans rock (though I'd have done fullsized if I didn't want the AWD).
But the P71? Cheapness is it's only saving grace, and that's not Trinity material.
