1uz is cheap.....manual trans adapter is not from what I remember when thinking about the swap in my AE86.

Xcessive manufacturing makes the adapter and EVERYTHING you need to finish the swap. Super cheap. http://xcessivemanufacturing.com/index.php/toyota/by-engine/1uz.html

guerillamotive has plans for a 1uz to audi longitudinally mounted FWD gearbox available for free (insert your own machine shop and materials here). Could be a good option if you went MR?

(disclaimer: Even though I'm drinking I still know a MR Miata is probably a bit on the ridiculous side even for GRM. But it does give you the bellhousing pattern for the 1uz. Maybe you could use that somehow...?)

edit 2: I DO have a 5 speed audi transaxle in my garage (similar to link above). You know, should one be inclined to build a MR miata or something. Was thinking of selling for scrap...

I'd guess the cheapest way to get 250+hp in a Miata via engine swap is still a Ford 302/5.0HO and a WC T5 with you doing the requisite fab work.

On a budget, I would look at either the LFX out of GM or the Honda V6 swap attached to the Miata gearbox.

What about a VG30E or VG33E? Super cheap out of a junkyard, nearly free from a z31 enthusiast, and you grab a Z31 bellhousing/na transmission for the manual rwd bits. The na trans isnt the strongest thing ever, but it is cheap and it'll hold just fine on a miata. Also repalcements can be had from a 240sx with a bellhousing swap.

I also made 315rwhp and 369ftlbs of torque on a stock z31 turbo setup, as in injectors/ecu/fpr/pump. I had a holset HE341 with an external 38mm wastegate, fmic with piping but otherwise it was stock. Thats not even the record, the record is 325rwhp but he only had about 320-325ftlbs.

So yea stock Z31 turbo or something similar and the manifolds to fit a miata if stock z31t manifolds dont or cant be made to fit. Some other GRM team has put a VG30E in a miata before...

Interesting...

How did you get the VG30E up to 315rwhp and 369ftlbs from levels of 160 hp and 173 lb·ft in it's stock 300ZX form?

So would that bellhousing pattern on the trans side be the same as the 944 or 924 pattern? Because thats some nasty thoughts if it is... 1UZ in a 944

I'm not sure about the reliability, but the Isuzu 3.2/3.5L makes pretty good hp and is already available RWD. And it's usually cheap. And it's got most of the GM 60* bell housing bolt pattern.

So many LS swaps out there for the 944 I wouldnt think it would be hard to find a trans for it

When I asked about using a 944 box, I was told that because it was a rear mounted transaxle that I would have to find a way to adapt the 1uz to the 944 driveshaft in order to get it to work (never got any details though).

Love the LS and all, but that 1UZ really tickles my funny-bone.

All the info is in my post. Big turbo on stock fuel riding the edge of what the injectors can do. I think duty cycle is something dumb like 130%.

But I ran it at 290whp for months with no issue. My other z ran at the same power level (290whp) for 2 years no problems, including lots of drift days and a few autox's. Lots of daily driving too.

E85 is the easiest solution, not sure how available it is in your area.

E85 requires 1000cc injectors that are ~$400 new. I'm sure there is a grassroots alternative, but I haven't researched it yet. Also-Tiny little turbo is too tiny too.

Or you take big injectors and cut the tip off. Supercoupe 36lb injectors become 72lb'ers when you do that.

Not sure how much a bigger turbo would help, but E85 will sure help- and use the stock compression.

How much tuning time is in the engine now?

And what's the cause of the leakdown problem?

E85 was the original plan, and still very much a possibility.

Lots more work to do in the tuning, and of course the leak down.

You are telling me to get to work on the known issues, so yes, we agree.

I know exactly the power level I need to succeed at the Challenge. Same exact numbers I established a year ago. MIGHT be able to hit them with the existing motor- not sure. The car has everything it needs except some power. Just exploring options.

Find a junkyard that has gov surplus propane powered fords. The iirc baby blue injectors are 1200cc. Grassroots way to run e85 safely.

i like this alot, plenty of availability on engine/trans/parts, plenty of info and aftermarket from the GTP/fiero guys, and the 3800's seem to like boost pretty well
