for my 64 chevelle project. have multiple 14 inch, 18 inch, etc air cleaners, both open and factory. have a welder. have some scrap metal. have no fear of failure, but don't want to waste my time unnecessarily. my main fears are how to connect to the firewall/cowl area, how to ensure no water gets down in there, and how to make the ductwork attractive to the eye. id prefer somehow to do rounded sides, kind of making it a giant oval in crossection, and a 45 or so angle in the middle.
this would also be my first free form fab project with sheetmetal. I learned how to mess with it some doing bodywork, but I am by no means any good at it.
additionally, it will be wrinkle painted when finished, so that should help hide minor flaws.
reason its gotta be so cheap is that I have so much else to do on the build that needs money and is more important. like a motor...
any ideas to make it easy AND damn near free? other than just use what I have....
Can't see what I am looking at.

im still trying to learn how to hotlink. lets see if it works this time....
either one. something similar. you guys get the idea....
im going for something 60's trans am/nascar/copo style here. oval may not even be the best route. maybe just rounded corners, I dunno....
I Googled "nascar cowl air cleaner" and came up with a metric E36 M3-ton of pics with lots of different options. The one below isn't as cool but is probably the simplest.

that last one don't do it for me. I actually spent part of today looking up google images for ones I liked the looks of, as I only had a vague image in my head.

googles smokey yunick air cleaner, lots of pics.
Just did. Came across the picture of the wood bucks that Smokey used to make his. Gave me the thought of Styrofoam and fiberglass. Would that hold up to the heat?

With the right epoxy, yes. Might be hard to find though.

This elbow could be done with some mandrel exhaust bends. Cut them in half and weld sheet metal in between. Then weld up the elbow to a standard air cleaner. Bondo and wrinkle paint to hide imperfections.
That may be the perfect solution. And cheap as I already have sheetmetal, welding wire, and bondo. All id need is a 14 inch chunk of 2.5 tube with a 45 in the middle. Sweet! Now off to the scrap bins!
