Technically a gm motor has won in f1 before as Brabham win the championship in 66 and 67 with the repco v8. The repco used the aluminum Oldsmobile block.

Ford has a long history in F1, GM not so much.

This is coming full circle considering Red Bull took over from Jaguar F1 (aka Ford).

Ford as a brand name on a cosworth motor has a ton of success. Ford as an owner and designer, not so much.

Is it wrong to unrealistically dream of an Andretti team with a Cadillac chassis powered by a Ford engine? devil

If it weren't for this nugget in The Drive's article, it could be correct- but...

The American automaker will start the development of power units this year, specifically a 350 kW electric motor and a new internal combustion engine able to run on sustainable fuels. According to the FIA rules for the next-gen cars, this package should debut in the 2026 season.

They are building a facility to make the Honda engine they have a license for.  It's not their motor.  And I don't see Honda willing to just give that IP and people to Ford.  3 years is a short time to make a brand new engine without prior info.

The ability for a race car to shake the bugs out of a new engine design or improvement is still hard to beat. Throw in the publicity angle and its money well spent.

So we have competing articles.  We will see.  Still, if Honda decides to keep making engines, I don't think they are going to share with RBP the secrets to the engines, just the drawings needed to make them when they have to.

Red Bull is brand new at engine making, so they need to ramp up their talent pretty quickly.
