Don't worry. I won't be relying on guesswork. Any airflow changes I make will be tested pretty thoroughly with a manometer.
(Theres been much too much guesswork in racing over the years on airflow. Scoops, cowls, splitters, cooling, exhaust, skirts, wings, vents... all of it)
Top Mounts are in some ways easier to deal with.
The protective shroud on them is a good place to hide mister nozzles. And the the shroud makes it easier to hide a thicker intercooler while it maintains stock appearance. You can pull the intercooler and put reflective heat tape on it to reflect heat from the valve cover back away from the IC and it will be hidden from visual inspection above.
Heat soak sucks. The main limitation to the stock Mazdaspeed 3 was an inefficienct top-mount that results in heat soak in just a couple of runs. On a hot Texas summer day, I rarely could improve significantly after my first run of the day. This is one place where naturally aspirated motors have it over boost.
