Was just offered this 1977 Civic in trade for my Saab, which I'm trying to sell.
Apparently a carb tune away from running sweetly, the damn thing looks immaculate. Same owner for last 30 years prior to current owner, all original etc. The proposition is only marred by one thing...'hondamatic' trans .
Still tempting, though. Not ever seen one this nice.
Man, that's a tough one. I don't know your Saab like you do but the ONLY drawback is the trans. I'm not sure if an auto would be acceptable in this car. Any 4spd or 5spd swap choices/feasibility studies done yet?
What about swapping a D or B Series into it?

Maaybe. 'Cept I imagine those swaps would require cutting it up (?), and I kinda like the idea of keeping this one original, with some period speed parts, if anything.

That one might be nice enough to overlook the unfortunate transmission.
There's one on my local craigslist that has been for sale for a long time at $4k. Manual too.

Ive seen a good number of manual 1g civics go on my local cl for parts for basically scrap money. They actually dont seem that rare around here as long as you are only looking for parts heaps. Finding one like you posted, though.. I've never personally seen one that nice or heard of one like that locally. If the comparative value of the vehicles works out i would get it. I honestly wouldnt care too much about the transmission. You dont buy a 30 year old econobox on wheelbarrow tires for driving dynamics. And if you do, you should expect to have to rip everything out and start over anyway.
since it's only "a carb tune away", i'd suggest that the current owner of the civic spring for said carb tune prior to the trade. but hell yeah, i'd rather rock that civic than pretty much any saab evar.
Judging from the front ride height the carb tune will be done on your work bench. And either the car is right hand drive or I need mo coffee. I love my Saabs but a Civic like that is hard to find.

^Good eye. The engine did come out at some point, but it's back in now.
RHD here in Australia
Scarcer than hens teeth around here. I love the car. I'd add Minilites and a manual. Next time you are in Loganville Ga USA stop by the house for a beverage Luke. What Saab are you selling?
