Will a sbc bolt in place of an 1982 iron duke engine with just different motor mounts?
Note- the following is all rumor and innuendo:
At some point, the trans bolt pattern was changed to the 2.8 V6 pattern, at least on the front drive blocks, I think. If its old enough and rwd, its possible, maybe.
It's in an amc spirit and has the standard(V8-etc)chevy trans bolt pattern.I'm trying to find out if I can use "off the shelf" parts to bolt the sbc in place of the 151 iron duke engine.
This makes me think an SBC in the '84 Buick Skylark I had years ago would've been a hoot in a straight line. Not sure it'd have been able to turn a corner, though....

Uhh, the 84 was transverse FWD dude...
A little more research I found that the first generation S10 used this engine.I've been on the jags that run site and they have everything to bolt sbc including the LS in the S10.This is of course an amc spirit not a S10 but I'm a betting man so I think I can use there engine plates and mount to V8 my amc.It was luck that I noticed the S10 used the same engine I have.
pres589 the car has a 904 mopar transmission with the sbc bellhousing. Not good at explaining things, basically it's a mopar trans that'll bolt to any sbc.
904 should handle an average SBC. Kind of a cool piece. I wonder if the 904 is more efficient than a TH350 or 200-4R as far as power absorbed by the trans itself. Apparently a lower gear ratio setup was put into the 904 around 1981; wonder what's in your car.
Good luck with the swap.

Yeah so? I've seen SBC's transversed into Chevy Citations using Fiero V8 install kits. Skylark was same platform in '84.
(Didn't say it was a good idea, just possible)
i'd love to see a pic of an Iron Duke with the Chevy small block bellhousing pattern- they had the BOP (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac) bellhousing pattern when they were putting them in rwd Monzas and what not in the 70's, then they got the standard GM fwd bellhousing when they started putting them in the fwd cars in the 1980 model year. the rwd F bodies and S trucks of the 80's used the fwd bellhousing pattern, too.
never seen or heard of one with the Chevy bellhousing- not saying they didn't make them, but this is the first i've ever heard of it.. and if it was common to use the Chevy bellhousing in AMC products, then there would be more Chevy small blocks swapped into them and those transmissions would be getting swapped into Chevy powered cars..
if it has the old BOP pattern, then you can get an adapter to bolt a small block Chevy to the trans. i believe you can get an adapter for the smaller fwd pattern, too.

novaderrik just google amc iron duke 904 transmission and you can see all the pictures and learn all you'd like to know about this transmission.I didn't think you doubted me and I'm glad I could enlighten you on this transmission.
iadr I'm super interested in your engine build.Do you have any pics you can share.I plan to convert this engine to efi.Did you go with megasquirt or what system?

i think what he said was that he just outdid anything AMC ever did in the field of using parts from every manufacturer on the same engine..
i think i need to find one of those AMC/Iron Duke manual trans bellhousings and a T5 out of a later 3.8 powered Camaro or 90's Mustang for my Camaro.

So, to recap:
Half a 460, with a Chevy bellhousing pattern, and you need a Jeep bellhousing to make it bolt up to a Ford transmission.
Man, sometimes things get awful inbred.
Wait, Boss 429 head? (thisthreadisuselesswithoutpics.jpg)

The 3800 T5s have a longer input shaft than the 90s Mustang units. (Or was that the point?)
For that matter, so do the SN95 V6 T5s. I think what happened was, Chevy stopped using the T5 except for V6s models, so to save money, they were just ordering Ford-pattern boxes, and Ford went to a longer input, so Chevy did too. The only hole in that is the 4th-gen F-body came out before the SN95.

Bolt pattern where the trans bolts to the bellhousing is different on the Ford and 3.8 F body than on other GM transmissions. Older F body T5 is weaker and the people that have them think they are worth their weight in gold, but the 3.8/Mustang T5 is stronger and cheaper.. AMC bellhousing could be a cheap junkyard alternative to an aftermarket bellhousing to hook a Ford pattern trans to a Chev engine.
What engine mounts and frame mounts should I use to put the sbc in place of the iron duke?Since the S10 came with an iron duke like my spirit could I use conversion mounts from "jags that run" S10 V8 swap or is there a better option?
Summit has the engine and frame mounts for the 4 to V8 here: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/trd-4516
