In case anyone was wondering what happened to that $1000 M3 in South Carolina that was recently advertised... The title is in my pocket and we will take it to GRM world headquarters to make a project car out of it. For a little while, we will park it next to the LS engine we have sitting in the barn. hint, hint!
It will be on display at the Mitty this weekend.
So you bought an M3 to sit in a barn? WTF??
No he had a LSx motor that was lonely

pretty sure there is no such thing as a $1000 E30 m3 in any form of disrepair.
Wife says you overpaid by $2,000. I say you STOLE it for a grand!
Im just glad someone picked it up and is LS swapping it. Lord knows I wanted to.

is the Wounded Warrior motif staying?
We paid $800 for it. It is on display at the Mitty. My buddy, next door, Bobby Thrash, at Strictly German, already found me some of the brake parts it was missing and I doubt the graphics make the cut.
I talked to head of PR for BMW last night (of course he is at the Mitty) and told him we would probably put an LS in it and he didn't like that idea. I told him he needed to come off a BMW V8 or V12 then, and his eyes lit up and he said we should talk.
This could get interesting.

Do the LS not because I'm an LS fanboi, but necause buying a cheap, used-up M3 is very grassroots. Installing an LSX and getting it road/track ready is very grassroots. Having the manufacturer give you a V-12 and the associated parts, and hold your hand while you finish the swap is not grassroots in my book.
Suggestion: if this is going to turn into editorial content, i'd stick with the LSx, because that's what your readers are more likely to do if they were to embark upon an E36 M3 motor swap adventure.
All you're going to get out of articles on a BMW V12 swap is "Well. Cool, but irrelevant. Next."

agree. an LS E36 is way more something one of us could use the info on.

I was thinking this car plus the M3 powertrain in the classifieds would have made an awesome challenge car, but this will make for good reading/dreaming as well!

Now contrast Tim's comment above to JG's Facebook post about the Somerset: Tim's post is all about "who you know", while JG's was all about...

Are there off the shelf kits for these? Readily available? Tons of aftermarket? Compact? Make big power if need be?
I'm not saying that i personally hate a BMW V8 swap, because i don't. I'm just as sick as everyone else of seeing LSx being put in everything.
But the reader base isn't going to be interested in something like that. They want something they can easily do themselves.
In reply to Ojala: Plus, how much more expensive are they to maintain compared to a BMW V8? Also, what about a manual transmission that will work behind it? Would a custom flywheel be required? It's not just a simple buy a M73 engine and install it.

I think BMW will help out because they don't want somebody putting a low-tech American engine in their car and have it perform better, get better economy (?), and be more reliable.

I'd be more interested in a BMW V8 or V12 into the M3 than watching y'all use someone's LS kit to drop one of those in. Especially if there's a good transmission option on that V12.
It's all about the options. We know it's possible (easy?) to drop an LS in. Show us that it's just as easy to drop in a BMW V12 and that'd make for some great reading.

I'd rather see the bmw engines as well. LS swaps are kinda boring these days.

Are you people mexi-CANs or mexi-CANTs?
I expect better a better grade of lunacy around here!
850csi is the only manual option I know of for the m73. Bmw v8s are cheap and neither the manual transmission or the dme will be a problem at all for that swap.
Im rooting for a blown slant 6 personally so what do I know.
