My wife has a mazda 6. I do not think 3 people in the back is a good idea for anything longer than 20 mins.
I rode in a CRV with 3 people in the back recently. Never again!
I think P71 is the answer here (but no manual option).
What about a dodge spirit? They had lots of room in the back and I believe you could get a manual.

i'm about to sell my '03 mazda6, v6 manual, sport package, silver over black leather, 165k miles, bose audio, pretty loaded car i think. little bit of rust bubbling up in the rear wheel arches, but nothing like the proteges i've seen. i'm second owner, love love love the car but mama says i can get a project car with the proceeds from selling the 6. new Fuzion HRi's on the OE 17" rims are currently in storage, while she's rolling on Dunlop WinterSport 3D's on Probe GT 16" rims. $4k and she's all yours.

With the stock tune, the lowest trim/power level of the 9-5 lineup will return 31-35 on the highway, depending on weight in the car, wind, speed, and hills.
I love me a 5spd Dodge Spirit as much as the next guy (which is why i bought an auto one and converted it to 5spd and still have it) but that silver one is not exactly priced to sell as he says. That's absolute top top dollar for what it is. Granted, it looks great, but $3500 will get you one just as nice if you look really hard and aren't in a hurry.
They do have big back seats. 3 across? Not great. But the legroom is REALLY good.
Oh, and stock they will get something like 28-31 on the highway with the 5spd.
