Hello everyone. I just changed the trans fluid in my skyline and I'm a bit concerned with the amount of metal on the drain plug, but I don't know if I should be. Car has 80k miles and no real issues with the trans besides the occasional grind going into 5th at high rpm. I also don't know if the fluid has ever been changed before. I appreciate any input!
It's enough to be aware of but not necessarily concerned about. I'd do another fluid change in a year and see how that one looks.
Yes. No. Maybe. Sorta? Not really? With no history it makes it hard to answer. If that's 80k worth of miles from new, I would be less concerned. If that's 20k miles and its had 2 trans services done I'd be concerned.
Manual transmissions and differentials are messy from a UOA standpoint. You expect to see wear at rates that would make an engine look like its ready to explode. So to answer the question.... maybe.

Yeah I don't know how old the fluid was. It stunk like nasty old gear oil, but the engine has been out before so it's hard to imagine they didn't drain the trans.
Looks like your 5th gear grind to me...
Your other option would be to do UoA and possibly have an analytical ferrography done to analyze the type of wear you're seeing.
