Three words: Field Sobriety Testing.
I've got 3 or 4 tap handles in the garage and every time I look at them I see a shift knob for something. Don't know what car yet. Now, I left my teens behind in 1972,so it's not just a kid thing.
When I was about 4, sleeping on the back seat of a Chevy station wagon with parents in front, a car pulled onto the road in front of us and we hit it. The driver was a teenager, with his younger brother riding along. My dad got out and helped push their car off the road, but when the police came, the other driver said we were going so fast the impact had pushed their car that far.
Everyone went home, but the younger brother later went to the hospital with a concussion, which progressed to serious brain injury, from hitting his head on the beer stein shifter. He was a popular kid and there were community fundraisers, while our family was vilified in the paper for reckless driving based on the older brothers lie about the wreck. The younger boy never recovered.
The older brother was arrested and convicted a short time later for robbery. And managed to break out of jail, and was stalking my family. Nothing serious came of it, but not the best scenario.
So, IMHO not such a cool idea.
On the other hand, sleeping sideways on the rear bench seat with no seat belts in a wreck seems fine.
See you're in Germany. Just keep the contents of the bag available (in the trunk) to present to the polizie if pulled over.
