Is this a scam

Looks like too much detail to be a scam, but no front plate in NY is sketchy.

It might be, but if so its not an obvious one.

I almost wonder if it isn't a PA car that came up..... no front plates there.

I always google the entire description in quotes, the scams usually pop up on 10 different craigslist across the country. This one came up clean.

Having bought a car in the Hamptons, I can tell you this:

It's a total pain in the ass to get out there.

The guy who sold the car to me said that he only responded to my email because I asked a few very specific questions and sounded as if I knew what I was talking about. He told me that he had placed the ad six months earlier, answered a million emails and a bunch of phone calls, but no one had come out to look at the car. I asked him to meet me in Port Jefferson, I took the boat across, looked at the car and made an offer. A few days later, I filled my pockets with money, got back on the boat, signed the papers and ferried the car back home. I ended up with a fantastic car at a very fair price simply because it can be hard to sell a car out there.

Especially a rear wheel drive convertible in February. Also, the area took a beating, first by the hurricane and now by the blizzard. I'd say it's worth checking out, in spite of the horrible color. Just be sure it didn't get wet.

It doesn't smell overly scammish to me. Putting your phone number in ads these days gets you a bunch of unwanted crap calls from people offering you 1/3 of the asking price of the car in broken English at 2am, or offer "help" selling the car (for a fee, naturally).

Well, he spelled "brake" correctly, so it is most likely legit...

Tooooo cheap. If it's in decent driver shape, that's a 5k car here in the Midwest (where Miata values seem to be pretty low). OTOH, it is the worst time of year to sell a sports car.

I love the 'no spammers' disclaimer in Craigslist ads. I can just picture a spammer seeing that and going, "Well, darn. Gotta rule that one out."

It's likely a scam. Or at least that is not a picture of the actual car. If it is the actual car the picture was taken almost 12 years ago. Sat 31 Mar 2001 04:06:55 PM EST to be exact.

The exact same picture was used in a 2006 post Here on the miata.net forums.
