The worst I've seen to date was a 2002 Elantra. Had the original oil and filter with 60k+ miles. Engine siezed. Checked the oil, it was dry on the stick. Pulled the pan to find jelly. Pulled the cam cover to find a perfect underside imprint in sludge. Cust was mad it wasn't under warranty.

Heh.  I remember (might have been here, might have been elsewhere) someone's co-worker bragging that they never did an oil change in that kind of mileage, because "Hyundai has an awesome warranty".  And their face went looooong when it was pointed out to them that you'd need to show proof of regular maintenance if there were an internal engine issue...

Well, 2 cases of brake cleaner was about right. It took forever to break down and rinse clean.

It has oil pressure again, we'll see for how long. Will do another oil change tomorrow into a clean pan and see what comes out.

My mother in law's neighbor inherited a flat head 6 Rambler American that was all plugged up.  He pulled out as much gunk as he could, and filled the crankcase with Lestiol, a kerosene based laundry detergent.  Got the car running, ran it up and down the highway until, as he put it, it didn't look like James Bond was escaping the bad guys.  Drained the crankcase, I swear dinosaur bones came out, but the little critter ran good.  He kept it for a couple of years.
