I own it. And after owning many Mustangs, yes I am biased.
My favorite is the first one I owned, a 68 yellow fastback with a 289 and a 3 speed stick. My second is the one I still own a 97 with a V6 and 5 speed that a set up for ESP. Check with Kent F. what is his favorite.
It all depends on how you plan to use the car. If the goal is to permanently shut down a show venue by jumping a curb, clipping off a utility pole 10 feet up and maybe killing a spectator or two... then the obvious choice is a 2024 Darkhorse with maybe 100 miles on the odometer.
My 2014 is a damn good car in just about every way. Comfortable, good cruiser, fun at an autocross or track day, great fuel economy. What's not to love?
If I were looking for a Mustang to own myself, I'd look for an S550 convertible, V6, manual trans car. They probably build a few dozen in that configuration, right? With a mild exhaust and some parts swapping these seem appealing.
Mustang question; are the 1971 to 1973 "big horse" Mustangs still on a derivative of the first generation platform, or were they actually based on something else? I do not have any interest in owning one, just curious.
Owned 3 1st gen and 2 fox bodies but I'd really want to buy a late S197 if I was going to get one.
Having one of these as a rental sealed my love of that platform:

I am partial to my S197
Special 60th Anniversary edition here at Charlotte Motor Speedway - along with every generation and tons of Mustangs all around the track.
I actually despise the Mustang, especially Fox bodies. Granted, they lead to the point we are at now starting in the late 80's. I really don't like my '21 GT. It's cool and fast but too nannified for my tastes. My 89GT was "cool" but what a steaming pile of tincanness.
Given all that, I like the 65-66 and 70's the best.
Oof, that's a tough one for me. I'll go with the New Edge Mustangs, 99-04.
If I had berk you money I'd have a 2000 Cobra R in the garage. That is easily in my top 3 dream cars of all time.
That generation also gave us IRS for the first time in a Mustang, the FR500 concept car and the Terminator Cobra.
I've owned a 1999 Mustang GT coupe:
(This is 21 year old stanger_mussle big pimping with my Nokia)
And a 1999 Cobra Convertible:
I've also owned a 1993 GT:
And a 1995 GT:
Yeah, I like Mustangs

Mustangs were Falcon-derived until 1974 when they were Pinto-derived until 1979 when they were Fox-chassis cars until 2004 when the S197 got it's own chassis and I'm not sure if anything shared that chassis.

The thing you loathe about the Foxbody is why I bought one. They are deeply flawed; I find improving and working around that fun.
Call me crazy but I like the Mustang II fastback. I know it's not the best performer but it looks great and is the perfect size. I'll take a v6 4 speed car. Similar to my 74 Capri v6.
Since nobody's claimed it yet, I vote for the second first-gen: 1967-68, coupe or fastback. I had a few (several), wrecked one on the freeway, did my first autocross in one, did my first 5.0 swap in one, bought my first roof-mounted bike rack for one, yada, yada, yada. They were much cheaper in the 1990s . . .
There is also of course this (I never had a fastback):
Love the timelessness of the 1G, had a Fox, and now S197. Coyote six speed rocks
1968 - the first year of the GT/CS

I recently saw a really clean Mustang II coupe. Been a while.

(Dark) Highland green is by far the best choice for a Mustang. The S197 and S550 Bullitt Mustangs are at the top of my list.
As a child I loved Legos.
As an adult I love 1979-2004 Mustangs.
If I had the cash I would make the following:
1993 Calypso LX trunk, 1979 Cobra bumper, grille, black projector lamps, hood (long scoop), Capri fenders and modified Capri style quarters, 1979 base taillights, SN95 Cobra brakes, tubular front K member, reinforced front control arms, 8.8, 5.0 Coyote six speed, 1987 style LX stainless tailpipes.
