These cars are hilariously terrible, and not even good to drive, keep the m3.

At the VW dealership next to my work, there is a tech with a 2.7TT AllRoad. On the rear glass he has a sticker that says "AllRoad Repair Tool" and it's a picture of a hand grenade.
In reply to NickD :
That generation of allroad is the most maintenance intensive Audi ever made I think. Between the motor, the air suspension, the control arms, etc, it's always something
I don't think I'm quite masochistic enough to own a 1st gen allroad, even though I love the way they look. Maybe if it was a 6 speed and had already been converted to coilovers.
That being said, I learned my lesson with the UrS6, and this time around, I have a much better idea of what to look for. At least I think I do. Famous last words
Years ago I really wanted a S4 Avant 2.7TT, but life changed and that desire has dimmed, but still arises once in awhile. I'd say as long as you recognize it as a toy car with maintenance needs and don't have to rely on it as a DD, then a B5 S4 isn't a bad car. Just do your diligence and seek out a clean one that hasn't been berked with by 15 previous racer-boy owners. I'd be willing to pay a premium for a clean, stock car with good maintenance records from as close to the original owner as possible. Be patient and willing to travel a fair distance for the right car.
You're definitely crazy. But that's a good kind of crazy. As long as it's not your only car audi's are awesome. The B5s4 avant is a good size. I have one that's pretty close to stock other than a manual swap and stage1 tune with 280k on it. Very fun, and useful. I was doing some wiring on a friends stage3 6speed swapped 2.7 allroad on coil overs and that drivetrain can be super enjoyable to drive but damn is the allroad a fat car!

In other words, treat it like an FD. :)
I daily drove a B5 S4 for a few years. I think their problems are real, but if you are a decent wrench and proactive, you'll be fine. It's not a Ford or Chevy truck though that can shake of lots of neglect.
Yeah, thankfully this would be a 2nd vehicle for me behind my Passat TDI. As a bonus, I've already got VCDS and some other diagnostic tools for VAG vehicles.
I haven't completely decided on this yet, but I'm feeling more excited about owning one of these. I might go about writing up a for sale/feeler ad for the m3 soon. If the right offer comes along, I'll go for it, but if not, I guess I don't have a problem with keeping it and putting off buying an S4 for a while.
