They are getting really cheep. I want one. I want a tin top not the convertible. I want to do a manual swap. I want to add hood louvers and fender flairs. Lower it a bit. A tasteful front splitter.
A poor mans DB7? Yes absolutely. I know they make an r type. My friend has one that he has voided the warrantees on and it is a ton of fun but I want to stay NA and gut it down as light as possible.
Just wanted to share my bad idea of the day.

which generation?
1996-2006. I would like a 2004 or newer as they got the 4.2l. However I want to go to a manual so that may impact that.
This generation

I just think the tin top versions are fantastic looking cars. Even better in person.
Ah okay I like the xkcoupes of that gen and the one after it. I wasn't aware of any manuals though.
I know the trans for the xk8 is a weak point. But the xkr has the Mercedes trans that is used in their 5.4 AMG's. Same exact drivetrain as my xjr.
Beautiful cars
Beautiful cars. Almost took the plunge on a gorgeous '98 'vert.
While there are those that will rabidly defend the Nikasil liners on the early ( -2001) engines, be aware that these can be a problem. The example I considered had around 80k on it, but took a while to restart when hot, and emitted blue smoke on startup.
One of the more humorous comments I encountered while doing some online research was "Remember, 50k miles on a Jag is NOT "low mileage".

One of the things that sort of pushes me away from these cars is that the regular 4.0 ones aren't very fast, and the supercharged ones are stupid money. Like, buy a regular XK8, buy a WHOLE SUPERCHARGED XJR with the same drivetrain, and have money left over.
I love the look of them. I think a manual would make me more interested in the 'base' car. Or a v12 swap! Has anyone put the old v12 in them? Hmm.
The manual was never a factory option to my knowledge. I would be looking for a later one. I think they got the 4.2 in 04 and that gets power up over 300 hp. I know I know LS swap is the answer and it probably really is in this case. as you could easily be at 500 hp for less than it would cost to get that kind of hp out of the R type. That would also make a manual swap easier.
Ooh! Then replace the all the “jaguar” badges with ones that say “Jugular”
Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me.
Although I'm biased as a "good" idea to me is LS swapping a newer BMW wagon and keep it as a DD.

So it could be a Jugular XKLS8. I like that.
When they went to the 4.2 all cars got the Merc trans. The down side was they spread out the gears some but it went from a five to a six speed.
There has to be a Merc bolt in that would make this a manual. Probably cost a pile of cash but it would be so much fun. I would love to take it out on a test and tune day. Let the cat stretch its legs in anger.
Found this on my local cl
the roof line of the tin top is just so much better to me. But in either case some PIX. this thread needs some.

I'm awaiting the build-thread...
Need to purchase the car first. I would like an 04 as it will be exempt from the OBD test in 2018 so get it this year and tag it and get the inspection done and then start the swap. Then in 19 no more OBD just safty so no problems getting the inspection at that point.
If I could find a 04 tin top under 4K I would jump. There was what I thought to be a nice one that they were asking $4500 but 24 hours later and the CL add was gone.
Oh and hte one I posted the Pix of they are asking about 8K for but it only has 45K on it.

Literally all I could find for under $5k, but no idea where you are or how far you want to go.
Now if you were willing to settle for a 'vert, they're all over the place it seems.

Man isn't that the truth. I bought my xjr for stupid cheap but a xkr coupe of the x100 generation would of been over 10k.
So am I going to get fruit thrown at me if I say the side profile of the hard top makes me think of the Oldsmobile Aurora? Not specifically in a bad way but that's what it makes me think of.
Nothing wrong with that. The aurora was not a bad looking car at all.
