This week's test car is a new Jeep Wrangler Sahara. So, um, can someone explain the attraction?

It's A Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand.

It's for the same demographic as a lot of Miatas, but with more masculinity. Come visit us, I'll take you to Moab. It makes more sense then.

On the road? Nope, can't help you with the Mall Terrain Vehicle.

Most 4x4's never see off-road use. I have never undrstood that. I had a last year CJ5 with a 304 in it. 13mpg sucked but off-road was a joy.

Never made it to Moab but I wanted to.

Remove the roof and doors for more wind than a Miata can ever give you. Then put it in 4-low and drive over something.

I once saw an ad for a Defender 90 with 100,000, "never off road" miles. I wanted to cry.

If anyone does make it to Moab, let me know. I can get there overland :)

Even a stock Wrangler is a lot of fun at Moab. In some ways, they're more fun than modified Jeeps. Rental Jeeps in Moab are a blast... get the insurance though.

Take it out to the Ocala National Forest and go Geocaching on a 5 star terrain cache. You'll get it.

I'm not sure I "get it" either, as my 15 year old NIECE wants one (a Wrangler, not a Compass or Patriot) and I've noticed that Chrysler has started a series of commercials aimed at women.

Yes, I do realize it's a good car that can be pitched to a wide demographic (that is, men and women), but the last 2 such vehicles that I remember being pitched STRONGLY to women are the Infiniti G20 in the mid 90s and before that the FWD Mercury Capri. And where are those cars now? (Rhetorical question...)

And when Keith is through scaring the crap out of you in the gorgeous Moab red rocks, it's just three hours east to the Southwestern Colorado high country of the San Juans (better wait another 6 weeks though, for the snow to melt out - 200 inches so far this season on my deck, with more predicted for the next few days). Unbelievable scenery, ghost towns and wildflowers in July.

A real 4WD will change your life in the American West.

This Jeep was new before getting a small lift kit and some new tires, then promptly thrown into this mud pit. That's what we do in Wisconsin. Oh and Mudder's Day is coming up again! (Check the date on the photo ) Its a yearly event for us, and yes my mother has fun, too.

How much do those go for....sounds like a road trip stop

I like Jeeps, but like the alternatives like Suzukis/Toyotas/etc better.

Around here, we see more rainbow stickers on Jeeps than Miatas.

Jeeps still have removable tops. The alternatives don't anymore. What a shame, really, because the 'zuk is a pretty good truck.

I would say that I respect the Samurai owner over Jeep every time I see one.

Dunno...I have looked at several mid-90's green Sahara's....something about taking the top off and having fun.The only Wrangler's that I associate with some sort of a stigma are the 4 cylinder ones.

If I had the budget, I'd add one to the flock of Miatae. Heck, top down, seats four (if a bit tight int the back), and can go over bumps WAY bigger than the speed bumps that I get to drive AROUND with the Mata. It is the Anti-Miata, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Went here this weekend - it's a TJ not a new one though. Some owners like to explore what they and their vehicle are capable of. Sometimes its on an auto-x course, a road racing course. sometimes it's the back woods or Moab, Baja or King of the Hammers. Then again, some owners chrome them out and cruise the mall - might be in a jeep, a miata, defender or gelandewagen. Most people will never know what their vehicles are capable of. That's too bad.

I have mine because it will flat tow behind the RV with no modifications to the transmission.

I know nothing of the Newer ones though.
