I think it is based on the versa/cube platform which has been bashed for it's bland-ness.It's nice to see one company has bucked the trend of model bloat, why this model has gotten significantly smaller as its gotten older.... wait a minute... Nissan didn't design the first one... Two different companies made crossovers that have the design flow of a train wreck? Unpossible!
difference being that the Aztek's ugly mass was functional - it has alot of interior volume, good cargo carrying ability, and some cool features that necessitated (some) of its ugliness.
The Juke is ugly, but is about as big as a compact hatchback car and without the redeeming performance qualities of a sport compact.

they make sense on everything in theory.
Press throttle, engine goes to peak torque and stays there period. It's perfect, No rev matching, no shifting.. You're always at the perfect rpm to accelerate out of a curve after smashing the apex. Transients kill efficiency.
Then you drive one and realize that our current cvt tech is pretty weak.
and one other thing....
somehow that yellow one always seems to be the "sample" pic used when the Aztek comes up in discussion. And honestly, it's probably the best-looking variant of the thing (and really doesn't look THAT bad, really, thanks to the body-matched cladding and decent wheels).
If you really want to show its ugliness, you need to go to the older models with the plastic side-cladding and retarded 3-spoke wheels. THAT variant was absolutely hideous...

I found it when I was looking for the first pic. Both pictures made me feel funny, kinda like having one too many drinks and seeing a fat chick all dolled up. You wanna, but you know you're gonna regret it later if you do.
In reply to neckromacr: I wonder if thats real or photoshopped? I would rock that with different wheels maybe.
Nissan should be ashamed of themselves for forcing the those of us with enough sense to avoid this mess to have to view it on a public highway. Simply hideous.
I actually saw an aztec similar to Neckromacr's photo at the GM engineering center when I was there for FSAE competition in 2005. It may be the same car, that was some time back and I did not take pictures.
the front end looks like a Murano grew [another] pair of eyes and then got thrown in the fax machine and someone hit "reduce 80%". the back end looks rather... I'm not sure if cool is the right word...but maybe aggressive? something just looks sorta right about the ass end up the Juke, but I can't place what it is or how to express it.
overall, I really don't know quite what to think about it. I'm severely conflicted on the styling, it looks very nearly aztec mofugly, but I almost want to say that it's the good kind of throw-up-in-your-mouth ugly. drivetrain wise, props to Nissan for actually giving it a 6 speed with 3 pedals to push, not so much props for only giving the AWD to you if you torture yourself by buying a CVT, MAJOR lack of props to giving 6M buyers the torsion-bar rear end as opposed to the multilink the CVT gets. ultimate cool for this thing would be a 6 speed manual with AWD and the multilink suspension, LSDs front, center, and rear, with no more than 50% power going to the front end. then make a gutted, caged racing version with uprated suspension, brakes, and engine, put some rally tires on it, and enter it in the WRC. there's a good chance you would win, all the competitors would be blinded by the ugly the first time they look at it!
When I saw the commercials I thought it was the fugliest thing on wheels for sale today, but that slammed black Juke is secks. I have the AutoWeek on DVR where they test drive it but haven't watched it yet.
