Wow. I think my bookmark for GRM got crossed up with VWVortex, cause I think I'm in the wrong place.
Custom parts rule. I must say, parking in Atlanta at times I'd love to have lambo doors just to squeeze in a space. Diggin the car and the custom work. Keep it up.

I mean, why does a BMW 2002 hood, or Saab 99 hood, hinge forward instead of rearward?
I always thought that this was done so that if the hood latch failed the hood wouldnt fly up blinding the driver. Maybe its just bling though....
I'm pretty sure GlennS is right. They sure went through a lot of trouble for it. Really, the Spitfire/Corvette clamshell hood is the one true way, and all others are just laming out.
Pony, I'm not a fan of the doors, but I dig the work that went into scratchbuilding the hinges, and your DIY spirit will fit in just fine around here.

You'd think they would have stayed with that if it was so good for safety, or companies that had at least one hood that opened that way would adapt it to everything, if it was good for safety (Corvettes have opened that way since '53, but what other Chevy has?)

well it makes it a much bigger pain in the butt to service the car so it certainly has its down sides.

It's about the only thing I dislike about my E30.
To the OP, not feeling the doors—it's a bit to rice/bling for me—but props to you for the fab skills, wish I had them!
Neat. Do you have any more pictures of the hinge itself? I'm trying to picture the geometry of it. I could probably use a hinge design like that at work.

I always thought of the front hinged hood on my 85 RX-7 as making engine bay service easier. With the little engine tucked down and back against the firewall and the long sloping nose, it certainly seemed to make sense.
