It was heavily about the car being a "performer," dodging and weaving and revving through city traffic. I found it odd that one of the key moments of the commercial was a slow-motion shot of the driver shifting the automatic transmission into drive.
Is it this bad these days for manual transmissions that a cheap sporty coupe commercial can't even be bothered to have the driver shifting gears?
Or is the tC not available with a manual (no idea...)

TC is available with the manual. No one wants to know that though, they want to sell it to the new gen of kids that think a stick is something on a tree.
According to the configurator, you can get a 2014 tC in row-your-own.
What's odd is that the frsby is the actual sporty car in the lineup. The TC is just a sedan, an aggressive looking one, but a sedan nonetheless.
Further proof that Toyota and their ad department actually have very little clue about cars.

Oh I dunno, they DO know that the person who buys a tC, wants something that SEEMS sporty..

I thought sedans had four doors?
But is it grounded to the ground?
whatever the tc is, it's a lot uglier now than I remember it being in previous years...
I thought the TC was a descent looking car when it was introduced. It's first facelift was not bad. But the current one just looks wrong in every way.

which is crazy if you remember them 25 years ago....

Toyota, on the other hand, seems to be run by a bunch of gonzo back-yard tinkerers who happen to have all the money and engineering resources in the world to pull off any kind of car that strikes their fancy. You can imagine these guys bench-racing over Sapporo beers and asking one another, "Hey, wouldn't it be neat to . . . ?" And then they go ahead and do it.
Doesn't sound like any Toyota I recognize, lol
Keep in mind that the TC is a coupe and it's purpose was to be a Celica replacement. A celica designed for milennials, lol.
They've always tried to market the tc as a sports car. Even though it kinda isn't.

My cousin (non car guy) refers to his Paseo as "that sports car I used to own".
That's their target.

When I joined my Scion club, we had a few tC's in the mix. They quickly dwindled off and replaced with xB's. The tC was added to the lineup around 2005 or 6 if I remember, to the xA which lasted one year, and the xB which was doing well at the time. They wanted a "sporty car" to add to the show.
One thing I know is the newest tC has added all the features that the Release Series cars (special edition and numbered) had as an exclusive, and the RS owners are NOT happy about that.
The tC is the car for "chicks" and the FR-S is the car for "Bro's" in Scion land these days.
Everyone I know who had a Tc traded a tiburon for it; seriously. Seems like they met their audience.
Last night I saw a Scion ad for an automatic FR-S. I think I died a little inside.

Me and my son always laugh about that line............maybe one of the dumbest statements to ever make it into a commercial. And Toyota thinks that some how saying that is going to help sell cars?

That's funny. I've just joined my local Scion club, and it's nothing but TCs and FR-Ss. I have the only xB1

I dont relate to the TC hate. They've always been totally decent cars and they still are, imo. I see them as a lot LESS gimmicky than the REST of the scion lineup pre-FRS, and almost certainly better to drive, too. I like the interior on the new TC pretty well. I can think of a huge number of things i dislike more than a TC. Now, the new design is less pretty than the old one, but it is edgier and i guess that's what they thought they needed to push through a sportier image. And, as someone mentioned, it was originally a celica replacement, and if we're being honest it doesnt look any goofier now than the last-gen celica did in its time..
Advertisers love to show moving the shift lever, whether it is pertinent or not.

Me neither. I haven't driven one, but the idea makes sense - put a Camry drivetrain and reliability into something less boring. I've considered getting one whenever it becomes no longer practical to keep my E36 on the road. Although I suppose one can accuse it of not being able to back up its looks with performance.
That said, it sounds like the commercial is pretty much wearing a Kick Me sign on purpose.

That sounds like what Mazda does these days. "Let's put THIS together, and see if it floats".... see the Mazdaspeed 3. I suspect they didn't realize it would be as popular as it became.
The only hate is that the bass thumping, lane weaving, backwards hat bros moved on from EG Civics to Scion TCs around here. Not the car's fault. I'd rather drive a Tc than a Corolla.

There's been glimpses of this in recent history...
The XRunner. (WUT.)
The IS-F.
The LF-A.
But it's certainly not what it was.
i actually like the new design vs. the old one. The buzz cut flat top is pretty neat looking.
