First time I've ever seen one go in the sidewall like that...
Ouch x2. I had something similar repaired a few weeks ago. Modern cars not having spares and commuting far is a real concern. I've thought of getting a full size spare for this reason.
Had same thing 3 weeks back. Only it was hidden by a second nail in the tread. Got the tread nail hole one patched for $20 then continued to have a persistent slow leak - about 1psi per day. Took it back in and found the second nail where sidewalk meets the tread. Unrepairable.
...and Discount Tire closed up the shop where I bought the tires so no way to claim road hazard warranty.
Screw it the rest of the way in, slather it in the same stuff they use for internal patches and SEND IT!
Just kidding. That sucks.
I hate to think of the number of rear tires on my sportbike I replaced because they picked up FOD. Sometimes with less than 100 miles on them.

I've never seen that either. I hate punctures. Part of teaching my kids to drive is explaining to them how debris accumulates on the shoulders and elsewhere on the edges of the trafficked areas. If I need to do a u-turn on a dividend highway, I always wait until I get to a cross street.
