posting for reference later. I seriously considered a K series for my rallyx e30, but the multiple easily available rwd transmissions and cheapness of the motor swayed me to mzr/duratec. I thought the packaging with a duratec would be a little easier, but I don't think so now.

Well....

One of my friends is doing a K24 engined 318ti (i know, apples and oranges) for stage rally, and he is having a heck of a time getting the engine low enough for the drivetrain angles to work, and he's already drysumped the engine.

Lowering the crossmember is the easy button for this, if you are a fan of poor handling.  Doing that puts the roll center really low, and it gets a lot more mobile, so you have to "fix" that with really stiff suspension that barely moves.  Maybe acceptable for a screwing-around car, not so much when you expect the suspension to work.

It's been a while since I last spoke with him, I think the next plan of attack is to move the engine and trans as far back as possible while keeping BMW driveshaft parts.  Ideally, none of the moving parts like driveshaft/trans/rearend will have any one-off bits you have to fabricate to get a spare part, junkyardable OEM is practically always best because it means the spares situation improves.

K-Series works well for cars that have front sump engines. There are tons of videos and posts on how to get it done. Cars that have a rear sump engine (i.e. E36), will be tough (see post above).
