As someone who owns a Series Land Rover and who hasn't really paid any attention to the new models - that made me laugh.
Series Land Rovers are different, they're more of "this is a damn nice tractor", which they are.
They're very different. But they're what I think of when I hear "Land Rover"
I have no direct experience, but it's my understanding that you can live with it if you're diligent about maintenance and can accept the ups and downs. And of course there's the judgement you'll probably get due to your poor life choices.

A friend of one of my ex's had a Freelander. Its been a while, but I distinctly remember something new being broken every time I was in the car (don't think it ever had all four windows working at one time), before the tranny finally E36 M3 the bed at something like 70K. I don't even remember it being all that nice inside, super chinsy materials/build quality from what I recall.
Truly a car with ZERO redeeming qualities.
Edit: I actually saw one of these in the wild a few weeks back - running and on the road. Can't even tell you the last time that happened.

I'm going to resurrect this thread to make the following point;
Freelanders DO NOT suck when compared to the entire market of 2000-2010 V6- auto trans.- AWD vehicles produced and sold. Here's how I know...
Bought a used one in 2006 coming off a Jeep Wrangler; it came with a gold plated six-year Ford warranty. Ford spent 30k at two different LR dealerships getting that rig settled, and since then it's been perfect, when paired with the religion level care and maintenance any Euro-marque from that era requires. Here's a few of the readily understood defects(?), and their 'repairs'.
1. The BIG one- the typical 'all aluminum, low coolant, overheating engine nightmare syndrome'. Shocker, eh? Now be honest and name a maker or model with the same sort of drivetrain that this won't affect?
2. The 'had to replace my tranny' gripe. It's the soloenoids dumb f**k- change them....or maybe you just used the wrong fluid in your ultra-mysterious Euro wonder wagon? No merde....it's a JATCO, just like the one they use in ALL the UMEWW's that blew their trannies. Keep your DexMurk swill out of here, and change it at 50k no matter WHATevr anyone else tells you.
3. It's a BMW EMS. If that challenges you or if you don't know what it means go buy a 3.8 Buick and stfu.
4. "The Timing belts ur scaaaarrry!" (See Isuzu, Suzuki etc. belt V6's- or better yet the chain drive ones)
....I'm bored now and ready to give up. TLDR? Maintain it properly, know your machine, and be pro-active.
Or go buy that Buick- wtf do I care? (Wait- you say your Buick Enclave is a steaming pile of trash!?! Quel surprise...)

That right there is a guy who owns a Freelander and and is a little prickly about it.
Signed land Rover owner. But not a Land Rover owner who even considered a Freelander.

This is entertainment right here. For the record I would take a Free Freelander, it would get gutted and engine swapped for more entertainment as a Lemons racecar. Now that is a good use of a Freelander.

Or, hear me out on this, they don't have the Ford "gold" to drop $30k on a mediocre cute ute to then get what is a very average reliability afterwards. 15 years is not that long, most cars can provide 15 years of trouble free service. How many miles?
