Kind of a spin off over the interesting car prices thread, where someone had brought up "lifetime" fluids as if they are a new trend. This had me wondering: What was the last passenger car model sold in the US where the manufacturer recommended regular transmission fluid changes in "normal" * driving? These claims have been around for over half a century - my 1966 Dodge factory service manual, for example, has the "lifetime" fluids claim for both transmissions and differentials.
Did other makes and models keep recommending regular transmission fluid or differential oil changes long after American manufacturers had gone to the "lifetime" fluid claim?
* Yeah, I know, the fine print would typically list everyday stop and go driving as "severe service" and recommend regular transmission and differential fluid changes.

Uh...trick question? As best I can tell ford is still on 150k mile intervals for transmissions and axles. The only thing I can find listed as lifetime service is the fuel filter. Okay, maybe 150k miles isn't quite what most people would consider "regular" but it's certainly not a lifetime fill. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I thought lifetime fill was generally a german thing, not american.
Dodge definitely still has replacement schedules for SRT stuff and some of them are quite short for track use.

Yep, I did the trans fluid in the Expedition last year at 50k. However, our 2006 Exploder had "lifetime" trans fluid, so maybe they've started going the other way again?
Honda seems to be listing 40K ATF intervals.
Honda has service intervals for every fluid in the car. Brake, trans, coolant, rear diff. It comes up on the service display.
My 2011 GTI has fluid change intervals, which reminds me, I am a bit past due for my every 2 year brake fluid replacement. Thanks for the reminder, actually!

Where I lived, a 66 Dodge would have been rusted to nothing in 5 years. They didn't build them to last your lifetime, just the life of the car. If they build them to last forever, they would have been out of business in no time.

Because nobody could afford to buy one in the first place.

My AMG Mercedes had service intervals for trans, diff, and brake fluid, all fairly aggressive by modern standards, but 500hp and 4200lbs are taxing on components.
