Any issues other than the E36 M3 milage? Its backed by a manual, so that is hopefully one less issue. Its a 1500 crew cab 2wd if that matters.

Hmmm I've put near 30k miles on mine (Dakota) without too much issue. I've done clutch (TB went out so it was one of those "while I'm in there") and the usual plugs and oil changes. That and a leaky heater core that I haven't replaced being that the truck is built around it.
E36 M3 mileage is correct . . . but my truck has a 3.91 rear in it.
I've yet to hear any GOOD things about them. IIRC, they have an issue with cooling, head gaskets and waterpumps. Other than that, they get crappy mileage, make mediocre power in a large truck and just generally suck.

QFT lsx fanboy.........its got 121k miles and oddly for a Chrysler product, no rust. Everything I've found suggests to expect 13/19mpg for these.....and that didn't really change much for towing.
RUN!
They suck, this coming from an ex-Chrysler Technician. If it wasn't Caravan related, it was 4.7's coming in at #2.
Typically with Chrysler, you get a great engine in a E36 M3 wrapper, but with a 4.7 in a FS Ram, you have E36 M3 motor in a decent wrapper.
Evidently I should have put a $1500 transmission in the f350 instead of making a quick $500.....
I'll put it this way, would it be good enough to tow approx 3000lbs to the challenge and back, and make it through a winter then to be sold off to fund a sub 100k '99 PSD? Devils advocate, I know.
"It depends."
If it has over 50k, plugs, manifold bolts, water pump, power steering pump, and tappets immediately.
Good luck on the '99 with under 100k being "affordable" after selling off the Ram.
I thought the only 2 V8s offered in '01 for Rams were a 5.2L and a 5.9L.
Expect gas mileage of ~11 mpg city and ~14 mpg highway.
If it's cheap enough, who cares? Give it a shot.
Jamie and i towed with his 4.7 Durango a few times to Louisville and back. It was fine.

It probably is an DR-bodied 02, where all of them are present.
I always hear bad things about them, but a friend of mine had one in a 2003 Dakota with a stick and it was great for him for over 150,000 miles with no issues. He was in a bad accident with it and went out and bought another one after, this time a quad cab AWD auto one, and so far, so good.
The mileage with a stick was 18ish IIRC. The truck felt pretty quick with it.

Its the first year of the 1500's redesign......I just put '01 because I guessed it was close. Its whenever they changed the styling, and actually made an interior somewhat worth a damn(see livable)

That'd be from within my family for whatever the dealer offered as trade in value......plus a bit of a discount even then as we'd still use it for the farm. Borrowing this truck is still my almost last ditch plan to make the challenge, I generally pride myself on being self sufficient though.
In reply to SilverFleet:
Coming from a ford/gm truck background, never in my wildest dreams would have I expected to find a stick and 3 pedals in a crew cab half ton.
In reply to SilverFleet:
I'm surprised it isn't rusted in half.....I looked at a '98 318 powered 1/2 ton and had the impression in a crosswind it would split in two.
The first year of that body style is '02. And I'll agree with pretty much everyone else, the 4.7L engine is horrible. And the earlier, the more horrible. RUN.
I bought '00 Dakota with one back in '01 and thought it was a great engine in a mediocre truck. My ex still has the truck with well over 100k on it, and it's never had any engine problems. Mileage on the highway was 19, except for the tankful while driving down from the Rockies.
I would love one with a 5-speed stuffed in a Prowler.
OK, would price point change anything? This would literally be turning the winter beater focus into a tow vehicle.....I have $1200 in the fukus
In reply to psteav:
The focus is easily worth 4k. Truck is owned by a friend wanting a bit better milage

Sorry, I'll take spit out my spark plugs and consumable coil packs of a modular ford long before I dick with another gm deathcool equipped vehicle.
I have an '01 Dakota with a 4.7 (my second) and I've had no issues it. It has 84k on it, has towed from Maryland to Gainesville 4x, to Detroit 2x, Cincinatti and multiple 200 mile round trips with no problems. Gas mileage is 15/19 empty, about 15 towing.
As for how fast, I can say that my last 4.7/auto club cab with 3.55's that I had (reluctantly had to sell it after 50k miles as the family grew) ran 15.4 @ 86 mph bone stock, right down to the paper air filter.
For me, not slow in a Dakota, not horrific on fuel and reliable. If the price is right and its been cared for, buy it.
1300zuk wrote: You'd be better of with a gm truck with a 4.3 and just deal with its slowness
a full size GM truck with a 4.3 is just an awful, awful idea if it's ever going to get a trailer hooked to it.. they make less power and use more gas than the 305/350 (early years) or 4.8/5.3 (later years) V8's in pretty much everything that isn't a stripped down 2wd work truck with a manual trans. and they make even less sense in an S series truck, since a V8 powered full size truck will do everything better and get about the same mileage as the V6 powered little truck.
