So, always thought these were cool. Rich kid in high school had a brand new one he'd always park in the very first stop in the lot.

I casually look around Craigslist and "Alfa" is one of my searches. Lo and behold an '85 popped up, has the 3 liter motor/transaxle from a 164 in it. Paint on the hood needs help. Has headers and new cats.

Hasn't run since 2015. He wants $5000, which to me seems like a crack pipe price, but I always think a non runner is worth less than $1000...

Thoughts?

I'd reference the classifieds over at alfabb.com to get an idea.

If the body is in good shape, it's worth more than $1000, that's for sure. And it really depends on why it's a non runner other than that. The 3.0l is a fun swap- and I really like that motor- lots of torque in it. I had one in a loaned 164, and can only imagine that in a RWD GTV6 that weighs a lot less. Oh, and it does matter how many mods are in the engine- the base 164, a 164S, or more than both of those in terms of aftermarket cams and whatnot.

I always assume a non runner is because of something big. If it was a small, easy, cheap fix the seller would do it themselves. That way the car runs and will sell for more.

I'm not sure which 164 engine it has, I'll have to find out. Is $5000 for a non runner really a reasonable asking price?

In reply to docwyte:

My gut response is "hell no" however they are going up in value and IF it is actually 105% rust free and immaculate, it could be worth $5k nonrunning. Replacing the whole engine is markedly easier than dealing with the rust these things get.

Interest for these has been on the rise, but they haven't gotten too expensive yet. It would have to be awfully clean to justify spending $5K for a non-runner. I like the funky (very Italian) styling, inside and out. The shift linkage lets the car down though----- it's vague, imprecise and has lousy action---- like a drumstick in a bowl of jello.

I also knew a rich kid who had one in college. We allowed him to park it behind our house when it wasn't running.......which was always!

A non-running Alfa GTV6... is there any other kind? Dude's keyboard is probably broken and he meant to say it hasn't run since '85.

That said, I do think they're super cool looking cars.

Oh yeah, the shifter was horrible but you get used to it after a while. The 1-2 shift is easy enough but finding 3rd and 5th required ... memory, basically. By trial and error you learn where in empty space to place the lever prior to releasing the clutch. :p

I need another car like a hole in my head. That said, if I could get it for a decent price ($1000-1500?) because its a non runner then I'd take it on as a project.

For $5000 there are many other cars (that run!) that I'd rather buy...

I loved mine. Non-runner can be a lot of things, some of them catastrophic in a GTV6. They need maintenance on par with a 944, and if you do not do it, bad things can happen internally. I would treat it as if you have to throw then engine away and price accordingly. If the body is very nice, with a decent interior, I would think $2,500 to $3,000 would be in line. As Joe said though, these have been going up, and decent ones are difficult to find since they were cheap for so long. someone may step up and pay the $5k.

If there is a way to determine what is wrong with it, and it was not a total system meltdown, it may be worth closer to the $5k.

Decent drivers are hovering around $5-7k so buying an unknown "not running" version seems silly unless you are a glutton for punishment. Of course, I am and I'm thinking about making the same decision...

Exactly why I think this one is grossly overpriced. From the pics it needs paint, so even if the chassis is relatively rust free, it still has cosmetic needs....

I'm debating sending the guy an email saying I'll happily drag it away for $1000 when he gets tired of looking at it....

I actually would have thought $5k to be not bad if truly and I mean truly rust free. I seem to remember interest in the U.K. being quite high as far back as the '90s and the Brits are only so fond of 'continental' cars. Show us the ad. I promise we won't pinch it from you. Especially not my oft-times broke ass.

It may be more helpful in this case to think of it as what does an engineless but otherwise decent GTV6 go for, and then what does a 3.0 alfa v6 by itself go for. Assuming the engine and body are both good i'll bet it's not THAT overpriced when viewed that way. But since you're assuming one or both are bad, it's a ridiculously overpriced deal and you should pass.
